What size winch would one reccomend for a SxS like the Honda Pioneer? It weights less then 1300 pounds so a 3000 pound winch should do the trick to pull it out or would it? I'm not up to par on my winches. I do want to stick to warn and was thinking bout the Provantage 3500 winch.

what do you think about that winch?

Rum, I'm not so sure a 3k winch will do the trick. Let me look into and decide.

I'm leaning towards the Warn Provantage 4500 Synthetic. Do it one time and do it right!

I ordered the winch and mount kit right from honda. its a 4000# warn. you should be ok with the 3500. The only reason im buying from Honda is The deal they quoted me on accessoires.

Newbee here and will be getting new Pioneer. I have not read anything that says you should or should not have a 2nd battery for winch. I will be getting a winch but do not want to get second battery if it is not needed. Thanks in advance, David

Hey David, welcome! I am not putting a second battery on mine for the winch. The pioneer alternator puts out plenty to run a winch in my opinion. I've always had winches on my honda fourwheelers without a second battery and they charge less than pioneer and I've never had any trouble. I am a mechanic but do not deal with small engines as much so I'm interested to hear what others on here say.

Thanks for that info and much appreciated. I am simply waiting for Brookhaven Honda to call for my red Pioneer. I think I am 2nd on the list. I have been looking at Smittybilt winches and of course Warn but have not decided. I have a son with autism and will not be deep mudding but want to have enough power to pull myself or someone else out. He loves to be in the woods and the reason for getting a sxs. I am looking at a 4000 or 4500 winch. At the same time, Warn is more expensive and has so many models it is a bit confusing. I am not a winch expert to determine if I should purchase an XT, Pro Vantage or a Vantage. Some of the other brands don't have as many models. Any thoughts from anyone? I have had cable winches on my 4 wheelers in the past and think I will go the synthetic rope route. I would like to get the best bang for the buck in terms of winches. I am open to any brand that has established reliability. Thanks for any info.

Welcome David, We all a newbee when it comes to the Pioneer... But not for long... Going to have that thing broke in the first week.

As for a winch, Rope is the way to go. If you are not going to be in lots of water/mud/sand... I dont know if I would go with the top of the line Warn. I bought a warn nock off that has lasted twice as long as the warn before it. But that was 6 years ago. I'm sure they have improved them by now.
Hard choice this is..

So what brand did you have? Hard to spend $600 when you can spend $200 if it is functionally the same. Thanks, David

LOL... I have had luck with my Venom winch. I have owned it since 2008. Been in all kinds of sand, mud, water and it still pulls good.
I agree with your comment above. You can buy 2 knockoff's and still come out cheaper then some of those name brand winch's.

4500lb winch with rope for $225 shipped! You cant beat that.

All I can seem to find is a KFI winch when I search for Venom is that the brand or Venom?

I may see what kind of deal on the honda issue winch I can arrange when I buy the Pioneer.

Can you provide more details on the mounting plate. I cant bring my self into paying more for the mount then the winch.

Yes. I used a 5x5x1/4 piece of angle iron cut to the lenth outside to outside of the square tubes that hold the front bumper on. The angle iron is mounted under these two bars. These two bars are made of very thin stuff so I cut 1x1x5/16 angle to fit on top of them between the two bolts that hold the bumper on ajd the round tube of the bumper. So basically sandwiched the two square tubes that hold bumper on between angle iron run the lenth of the square tubes and my big piece of angle run underneath the square tubes from side to side. My winch fit perfectly inside the big angle and the top of the front skid plate. I have pics but when I try to put them on here it always says they are too big. Maybe I can email them to you and you can put them on here. Obviously a pic is easier to understand than me trying to describe lol

I'm all for fabricating what I think will work, but after close examination of the winch mounting kit, I can see that there are 2 plates that basically box the two square beams that a winch will mount to. In doing so, I believe that will make the mount as strong as possible.
My winch ought to arrive soon, so depending on availability, I may go with Honda's mount system.
