I am new to this group and am about to purchase my first 4X4. I am been riding ATV’s and Jeep trails for years and now it’s time to try something different. In all my research I am down to the Pioneer 700-4 deluxe or 1000-5. I like what I see on both but trying to justify the cost of the 1000-5. It will be for farm work and trail riding. The speed of the 700-4 does not bother me but a little disappointed it has no low. Some of the places I go my jeep has to be in 4 wheel low to get up and down. very rocky sometimes steep trails.
Anyway I have learned a lot just be reading . Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated.

If you’re serious about trails and want a pioneer, the 1000 is the way to go. I’ve had a 700-4 and have a 1000-5 now.

I have a 1000 and I think it’s much better than the 700. I’m not big on the speed but the 1000 has low range and turf mode. They 1000 also hauls and tows more than the 700, it is a great machine in general. The benefits of the 700 to me is the smaller overall size if you’re in tighter areas. I don’t think you can go wrong with either but if you can swing the 1000 I would definitely go that route.

Say no more, the 1000 has the low range and the engine braking.

From a different perspective...
Here in Colorado, its very high. Altitude is a killer on hp. So typically we always buy the highest hp machines we can get. I live at 8400ft. and my typical ride is between 9000-13000ft. You won’t even see a 500cc machine at a dealer and if you try and buy a 700, they tell you flat out that you’ll have problems at altitude.
I even had a buddy put 29s” on his 1000 and had to take them off because he lost too much hp.

Get the 1000-5 More suspension more ground clearance more power more speed not as tall Turf mode haul more people and weight. pull more ride better 675cc vs 999cc. Do it right the first time save money and time.

I have a P1000-5 2018, love it. I have never driven any others for comparison but this one has never disappointed and I like it that you can run at 20-30 MPH and have a conversation with your passenger without screaming.

People will laugh I have no experience with the p700. The rincon which is way smaller way lighter with the same motor and transmission is a turd. Put a set of aggressive 28s on it and fall off into a mud hole and it just revs up tires goes no where lol

The 1000 will do the same thing and I'm betting the talons will too. It's not lack of power. It has something to do with the program honda puts on these machines.

What program? Gearing means everything. 3 speed is junk.
People that's smarter than me would have to explain it to you but it's real. I've experienced it many times on the 1000. Once you figure it out, you can hit everything with just a little foward momentum and all is good most of the time.

I agree with what others are saying. If you buy the 700 you'll soon sell it and get a 1000. I did that. The 700 is a fine machine but so under powered when it comes to steep trails and serious work.
Hey Doug, haven't heard from you in a while, how you been?

As I understand the DCT bog - my Talon idles at 1500 rpm, clutch engagement is at 1800 - there's simply no torque down there. Like TripleB said - a little bump usually gets me up and over. Note that I'm not a hard core SxSer, I love the DCT and will learn to work with that shortcoming.

I caught the bog on film at 25:15 -

I have a 700-4D and a 1000-5D and love both units. Your best choice is dependent on you usage. I use the 700 for hunting. It gets into smaller spaces with less problems. I have 27" Mud Lites on it and power is not a problem. Pulls a trailer with 2400# of firewood with no problem. The 1000 is more of a cruiser for me. Much better ride and smother engine response. I do like the low range and wish the 700 had it, but don't underestimate the power of the 700. I also like the Turf Mode on the 1000. I wish the 1000 had a hand brake like the 700. For me, top speed isn't an issue with either as I rarely get over 25-30MPH on either. Choose your vehicle based on it's intended use.
