Is there truth to what the dealer said at time of purchase? If first service is not done by the dealer then the warranty is void on the 700-4?

Near the back of your manual it states warranty is not voided if you do your own service. But if you mess it up... well.

I bet the charge $500 for first service too.

Do it yourself or have it done, just keep receipts for oil and filter, and keep a list of work done, and who did it, and you're good... as long as it's done correctly.
