I have a bunch of 5w-50 oil left over from my previous Polaris machines and was planning on using it in the 2015 Pioneer 700-2 that I recently purchased. I am not very concerned about it but I thought I might as well be safe and ask if anyone has more knowledge than I do about this subject or has any experience using 5w-50 in Honda machines.

Thanks!

If I did run it in Alaska I would run it in the summer. The 5w designation is for cold start up, the 50w is for the engine at operating temp. In Alaska I would run a 30w in the winter.

IMO...the 700 does better with thinner oil. If you did, I would def wait until the height of summer.
Also, is it actually wet clutch rated? Remember, polaris machines don't have clutches, so there is no guarantee that popo oil is.

If it's the synthetic PS4 stuff I'm pretty sure it says it's wet clutch compatible. I would probably run it, I live in Florida so I mean it's 85 plus every day but maybe not somewhere where it's cold lol

Thanks for the replies! Great thoughts.

It is actually Mobile 1 5w-50 and I think I will go ahead and use it. I don't typically run my machines very often in the winter time anyway since it gets so cold and snowy up here. For me, winter time is when I do most maintenance and upgrades in the garage.

Is it JASO oil? For wet clutches?

Lower weight oils tend to be Energy Conserving, you don't want those in your wet clutch. Look for #3 and if it says EC, don't use it.

A quick search doesn't show any Mobil 5-50 motorcycle oil. Is it JASO rated? If not, don't use it.

Although it does not say energy conserving on the API logo. I did try it considering this fact but the tranny is definitely doing some weird things and shifting rough. I just did a test drive down the road and back. Gonna probably drain and refill with something else.

That is Definately NOT JSOMA compliant oil.
DOESNOT contain the additive REQUIRED for wet clutches
Continue to use & you WILL HAVE Transmission Problems. ( change ASAP )
1st. shifts different then Clutches start to slip & keep getting Worse lots of $$$$$$$$ out of the old wallet.
Correct oil & filter is cheap compared to trans repair or replace.
Oil you have is Main purpose is automotive .

No go on that. I kinda had a feeling it might not be. PoPo engines have no "clutch", so they can run it.

There are good and cheap alternatives. Wally worlds Supertech ATV/UTV synthetic is available in a 10-30 and a 10-40. Then there's Rotella T6 5-40. Both very good.

Depending on where you purchased the oil, you might see if they will simply swap those quarts for something like this Mobil 1 Racing™ 4T 10W-40 motorcycle oil | Mobil™ which is JASO/JASO MA.

As a reference, JASO MA: This is the standard specification for oils that are used within one oil system (where the engine, gearbox and clutch use the same oil). ... JASO MA2: This is a higher standard specification for modern motorcycles. , source What does the JASO oil specification mean?
