Was out riding for the Labor Day holiday weekend and got into some dusty dirty areas so I wanted to check the air filter on the trail. This is my first attempt on my deluxe 1000-5, but was surprised there are two different types of clips, and then once you get the cover off you need tools to open the airbox and get to the filter.

I didn't have the correct tools on the trail so I just buttoned it up and went on our way. Has anyone come up with a tool-less access to the airbox in the aftermarkets?

Also, is there a way to extend the opening of the bed for easier access? I feel like I am praying to the Honda Gods to get in there.

Coming from other brands of SxS's its a common design to not require tools to access/change the air filter.

I welcome any and all thoughts and suggestions.

It does take tools and time to check or change. But if you put a PC filter skin over the intake under the hood you won't have to change it for a long time.

I changed my air filter at 6,200 miles. It was good for at least 10,000 miles but I had a new one and put it in since it takes a bit of time to replace it. I don't follow in the dust so I will check it again 16,000 miles. Just turned 8,000 miles. If you follow in the dust I would replace it every 5,000 miles.

That's why I went thru the hood and use a washable pre-filter IMG 1743IMG 1745

I ride in a very dusty area. My driveway is long and the gravel is this black stuff called crush and run (its used up here in NE TN)
This stuff hangs in the air when stirred up and gets everywhere
Except my stock air box. Very pleased how tight it is, disappointed in access to it though.
Of all the little annoyances on this machine, this is low on the list. Now not having a real parking brake is just plain freaking stupid.

Will the Air Filter really go that far between changes? I am used to checking it after every ride or ever couple of rides.

Polaris has a really good air filter but the Honda is better and the air has to go up through it from the bottom side. It takes time to change or check it and I cleaned it up real good before I took it apart. 5,000 miles should be no problem for most but in extreme dusty conditions it may be better to check it at 2,500 miles and since it takes time to check it I would have a new one on hand.

Nothing available from K&N yet? Had one in my Scrambler and it never took long to clean/reoil.

Changed mine today at 22hrs/72 miles. It was pretty dirty probably due to my homemade under dash snorkel. I removed the snorkel and replaced the prefilter lid with the newer version. It was a bit of a pain in the a$$ changing the filter element. The gasket went on the cover fine, but I gave up on the gasket that goes under the filter.

That's why I use PC filter skins over the intake under the hood helps a lot. I clean the PC skin after every 150 miles. You can go longer before changing your air filter. Saves lot's of money and time.
