Hey alI, I know it's been a while since I've post but I'm in need of help.
I have a 2020 P500 with 430 miles on it. It's used mostly at the deer lease and some around the house.

Thought I check with all the gurus on here for help before taking it to the shop.

This weekend (Friday) at the lease it was in the low 40's and went to start it and it stumbled and running rough and died. Then the engine light came on and was solid. Tried again and the same thing. Went on to the stand and came out about noon (15 degrees warmer). Though I'd try it for the heck of it and started right up and no engine light. Unloaded it and road it around about ten minutes and all was normal. Saturday morning the same issue and same result (wouldn't start and light on). Later that afternoon (running fine of course) I loaded it up on the trailer to bring home. This morning warmer temp and cranked right up and no light!!! It's only gonna get colder as winter goes on and I need my buggy! I don't know if it might have caused the issue but the fuel tank was at 2 bars.

Hopefully you guys can give me a clue and it won't go to the shop storage because they're always backed up a couple months.

Anyone have any ideas?

What they 👆👆👆👆 said, and how to load test a battery.
.
In some cases, our Hondas will crank with a bad battery, but the voltage is not enough to operate some of the systems, so it will not start.
.
In MANY cases, our Hondas will crank AND START, with a bad battery, but the voltage is not enough to operate some of the systems, and then other problems show up.
.
First step with any troubleshooting is to eliminate possible problems and then move to the next.
Even with a new battery, if there are problems, it needs a load test.
.
Most people do not have a battery load tester, but you can use a multimeter.
Hook up your multimeter to the battery.
Key off, what is the voltage?
Key on, what is the voltage?
Turn on EVERYTHING , high beam head light and any other accessory, step on the brake.
Now what is the voltage?
Now with all that still on, crank it over while watching the voltage.
.
This test tells us a few things
  • If the voltage never drops, you have a loose wiring problem.
  • If the voltage drops below 10 volts, your battery is weak/bad.
If the test shows a weak/bad battery, you may have something drawing power with the key off.
Unhook both negative and positive cables.
Trickle charge overnight, low amps over a longer charge time is the best way to charge a battery.
.
.
Next, after reading what you said about how you use it.
It could be fouled plugs or with your description, maybe a cracked plug.
Depending on your riding style, you may have to change plugs on a regular basis.
Our Hondas will foul plugs if not ran up to operating temp for a period of time.
I have read recommended at least 3 fan cycles to ensure the spark plug gets hot enough to burn off the carbon.
"What does that mean to me?"
IF you are just riding around, checking stands, you will not get hot enough to burn off the carbon.
Our Honda engines take awhile to warm up.
Take it out, and ride it like you stole it. Not only is it fun, but it cleans the spark plugs.
addition to that information. ☝ ☝ ☝ ☝ ☝
Once the carbon deposit is large enough, it can not be burnt off.
- symptoms: rough idling, stalling in gear.
Had read somewhere that because they are iridium plugs they can not be cleaned and must be changed.
.
.
Did you see if you have any stored codes?
Yes, I know yours is a 500, but pulling the codes are the same.
I do not have a 2020 Service Manual, but the 2019 500 version code check is on page 4-7.
.
.
Last thing, I have read about a few other low mileage 500 owners with bad fuel pumps.
.
.
Let us know what you find, maybe it will help the next owner.
.
Have a good day

I'll get to checking and see what I can find. I never even about the battery and the cold. My first thought was something in the fuel system or electronics because it would start but wouldn't continue to run. I guess I was flashing back to my 2004 Rubicon that I had to pull the choke to start every time no matter the weather from the day I bought it new. THANKS for the help!

Make sure you put ethanol free fuel in it. The stator went bad in mine and would randomly shut off and the dash would act crazy.

When I had my 500 I had to leave it on a battery tender or I had the same issues in the cold. My bet is the battery

Most people do not have a battery load tester, but you can use a multimeter.
Hook up your multimeter to the battery.
Key off, what is the voltage? 12.73
Key on, what is the voltage? 12.42
Turn on EVERYTHING , high beam head light and any other accessory, step on the brake.
Now what is the voltage? 11.88
Now with all that still on, crank it over while watching the voltage. Voltage drops to 9.86

After firing up (everything still on) and running voltage jumps to 14.40, so I'm guessing the stator is good.

Gave the Honda dealership a call to check pricing on battery & explained what happened over the weekend.
After having the conversation, he said the battery needed replacing.

Going to start there and should find out if that's the only issue because we will be having the same temps in the lower 40' like last weekend in a couple days.

THANKS for the help guys and guess I'm going to get a battery in the next day or so.

Yes I'm changing out the battery in the next couple of days.

Mine has always been on a battery tender during most of the summer months here at the house. During hunting season, it stays up at the hunting camp an gets used 2 or 3 days a week.

Do you have a winch with a wireless remote? If so, most of these set-ups leave the receiver for the remote ON all the time, even when the machine is switched off. The constant draw on the battery drains it if the machine is left idle for long periods. (Found this out the hard way after I bought my 2022 used. I leave it on a battery maintainer when not in use now.)

Running the battery down flat can permanently damage it.

That could only happen if you have it powered to a battery direct source, it should be wired to a key-on powered source only then it cannot drain the battery.

Most winches are wired directly to the battery. One of these days, I'll look at splitting the receiver on to key-controlled circuit. Just haven't had the time to get in to it.

No wireless remote on my winch set up. Battery had never been completely dead but guessing it had just gotten weak, and the cold weather brought it to light.

My winch is wired only to work with the key on. I will be honest, I have used it (to bind it down to the trailer) without the engine running, which probably isn't good for overall battery voltage.

Running the winch for a couple of seconds with the key off is nothing - don’t sweat stuff like that
