Ok so I've never posted any repairs start to finish or added more than 3 pics to a message so here goes.
2016 new year ride in a first time sxs ride. What happens I center hang a rock that looks like mud on the trail. It broke 3 bolts on the front if the engine skid plate. The front of the skid plate folded in half backwards acting as a plow. I have since straightened it out multiple times because it CAKES with mud and I feel the engine vibrations were it is jam packed. So I changed the oil today and thought why not let's fix this. So I removed the engine skid plate with 3 broken bolts and
water running down one arm since the frame was full of water this is my frame. 20170814 165205

Ok now to remove bolts. Tools I used :
1/2 cordless drill, 1/8 & 3/8 drill bit, centering punch, astro pneumatic nutsert kit. 20170814 165625
Center punched the holes
20170814 165955
Drilling the first bolt and it broke loose screwing through the frame and broke my 1/8 bit but that's ok $388 they have a lifetime warranty.. 20170814 170059 001
Drilled the second bolt and it doesn't budge so drill it with 3/8 bit and use my nutsert tool to install a threaded insert.

20170814 171137
A few hits with the LFH (little F'n hammer) on a couple 6x6's and the skids are as good as it's gonna get.
20170814 180235
3 M6 bolts plus the existing stock bolts and my skids reinstalled better than new.

It's not as abrasion resistant, dont be tempted to the cheap side.
See I want a full skid front to rear but am a tight ass and don't want to buy something that doesn't work. I don't wanna spend $300-350 on plastic and spend 8 hours building one when I can buy bolt one for $550 ish. I like the skids @PioneerPete has but think he bought his.

UHMW is more durable than aluminum, slides over rocks and things aluminum would catch on, doesn't stick to mud like aluminum.

It's an engineered plastic designed for that type of use. It's used in mines and steel mills to line the conveyors.

I spent the extra and bought UHMW for mine. I've been very happy with it. The best part is that it doesn't have the seams between panels of aftermarket plates (except bumper to skid)

One thing to keep in mind is broke bolts are not going to be avoidable with more skid plates. I've bent 4 bolts and broke 3 but many of the obstacles would have been major hang ups without a flat belly.

got mine from trail armor. I think they were around $700. Should have come with stainless bolts for that price. All the bolts are rusting.

Stainless bolts are probably not a good idea. They are more likely than regular steel bolts and harder to drill out if they break off. A coated grade 5 bolt would be more than adequate.

Mine looks rough but i can't blame it considering what it's been through. It's job is to take the abuse. I like that it's only 3/16" thick and I've yet to hear of one splitting unlike the uhmw.

I hope the 700 has better factory skids than the 1000. It comes with a skimpy bikini lol

Has any one thought of using a counter sunk torques or Allen head screw on a homemade skid, if the heads weren't exposed, they wouldn't be getting cought and broken off. I know it wouldn't work for the Honda skids and probably the aftermarket ones either.

The problem I see with that, is you will need to go to a large thread so you get a decent enough sized head to hold it all together.

Or just use more screws, and nutzert the frame, I used 3/8" dia screws on the skid of my old tube chassis rock crawler.

These came with my skids and work great. Haven't seen any bolt head damage at all. Might be able to find them separately somewhere.
