do i just need a receiver or do you need an amp as well? Also whats the difference between a receiver amd remote, they look identical to me.
so i am not a stereo expert, but here is my opinion since i just went through the same process:
i wanted a smaller stereo/head unit and did not like anything i saw. i don't really listen to radio stations, mostly just the music i have on my phone. So i went with a Bluetooth only unit without the internal amplifier that most receivers have. so i needed an amplifier (most receivers do not NEED and amp to function, but..). In my opinion you are better off with an amplifier anyway, especially if you are looking at the cheaper receivers. Without the internal amp, the receiver is also smaller.
For the speakers - i didnt want the wakeboard tower style mounts, so i found the mounts below and screwed them to the roof (i have an aluminum roof). I probably could have better quality speakers but the ones i chose are good enough for me.
the system is really clear louder than i need it to be. maybe could have went with 4" speakers instead. it still needs a sub, but its a good start.
here is the parts list - all are marine/weatherproof rated
