The Pioneer 1000 differentials are pretty much similar to all other Hondas with the drain plug access through a hole in the skid plate directly on the bottom and the Front Differential Inspection cap on the front left and the Rear Differential inspection cap on the rear right of each respective differential.

Updated 3/15/18 for LE Models with larger differentials and oil capacities.

did u use synthetic oil and when/how often should these be changed ?

Here is the official HONDA recommendation for Differential Oil. Use Honda shaft drive oil or equivalent hypoid gear oil SAE 80-90 weight.
- Front
---- 11.5 US oz at draining
---- 16.9 US oz at disassemble
- Rear
---- 15.9 US oz at draining
---- 18.6 US oz at disassemble

That being said I personally use 75w-140 Full Synthetic oil in the differentials on both my P500 and P1000. Of note they seem to be noticeably quieter during operation. This is likely due to the properties of the oil viscosity thickening as it gets hotter there is less audible gnashing of the ring and pinion at speed.

how many miles do u have on ur rig
Right now 240 miles. Every Honda I get I change all the oils on my initial service, On the differentials I will usually change it once a year if I am driving a lot (Over 1500 mi a year) on the opposite end of the spectrum I had a Rancher 420 AT for five years with only 236 miles put on it, and thus I had only changed the oils in it one time as it rarely left the yard after the first year of ownership never seeing mud or deep water.

A lot depends on your driving conditions and how much you use the machine and whether it is stored indoors in a climate controlled environment or subject to the elements of extreme hot and cold. Other than the initial service when I go all through the machines I typically follow the recommended maintenance schedule of miles and hours. My job has kept me from riding much for the past 13 years having to relocate in 2003 away from rural riding access to living nearly in town.

Whats everyone planning on putting back in for oil? I was thinking some kind of high quality synthetic since instead of the honda stuff

I used the Oreilly auto parts store brand. It's cheap and I buy it by the gallon.

I added 50% Lucas to thicken it up and quiet the gears a little.

I will probably change it every year since I play in deep water. That synthetic is like $20 a quart or more. The store brand is <$20 a gallon.

I had used royal purple 75-140 in the P700 and then got water in it. That was a costly mistake.

I put the purple stuff in.
It does run quieter but you probably dont need the fancy color for that.

I was considering that since its so easy to find. Summit Racing is 2 blocks from my trucking company. I was considering our oil too but I wonder if its too heavy for the rear ends. We got 80w-140 chevron synthetic for the Peterbilts.

I put 75w140 in - but since I was changing the viscosity I wanted a high quality oil.

what research lead u to come up with the decision to run that weight rather than what was recommended? Im sure u have a good reason could u share what got u to that conclusion.

Very very useful this post was by the way, I zeroed right in at what needed to be done by looking at the pics. Had I done this intuitively without reading this, undoubtedly, I would have thought the lower left bolt next to the fill port was the drain like on a truck axle.

For what it's worth, I'm using Amsoil severe gear 75/90
