Just got my viper 4500 winch with synthetic rope I ordered last week. I noticed it came with a chrome fairlead....I would prefer it was black. Can it be painted?

Really hard to paint chrome and have it hold up. You just can’t get enough adhesion because the finish is so hard and sanding it proves to be impossible if actually chrome. If it’s polished aluminum you’ve got a shot. Black is easy to touch up or respray though

Chrome usually needs to be either machined off or ground off.

Replacement fairleads are relatively inexpensive. Time vs buy would be a consideration.

I'd probably paint it and hope it sticks or buy one that is black. Anything painted or annodized will wear through after a few uses and you'll be back to gray aluminum

I am surprised that it came with a fairlead and not a hawse being that you got the synthetic line.
