Lately I have been feeling more tipsy in my buggy. I wasn’t sure if it was do to an issue with shocks, riding more challenging obstacles or my tire/wheel setup. I am leaning (pun intended) toward it being... wheel/tire setup. I wanted to test out that theory... luckily I have a good friend willing to indulge me in an experiment. @futzin is a good friend and neighbor with a P500 (Critter) also, and I have pretty much followed the same mods he has to my P500 (Dingleberry). So we have swapped out our wheel/tires to test out. Here are the original setup details:

Critter's - Kenda Bearclaw HTRs (Front)27x9-12 and (Rear) 27x11-12 both on ITP Steelies with a 4+3 offset
Dingleberry's - Big Horn 2.0s (Front) 27x9-12 and (Rear) 27x11-12 both on ITP Steelies with a 5+2 offset

Anyone running either of these setups, let me know your thoughts please.

So those are now in reverse. I want to point outother than the noticeable tread pattern difference, the HTRs have a more square profile and the BH2.0s are more round, HTRs are an 8 ply tire and the BH2.0s are a 6 ply.


AND another difference that has irritated me since they arrive and were mounted... The BH2.0s do not measure a true 27! The HTRs do. Here is a side by side to show the difference in height.. the BH2.0 barely measure above 25.

Have used both: Adirondack Mts.N.Y.
BH 2.0 's <> 27X9X12 FT. <> 27X11X12 REAR 6ply. <> 4x3 offset <> 7.0 PSI <>. Nice ride & OK Traction

KB HTR 's <> 27x9x12 Ft. <> 27x11x12 Rear 8ply <> 5x2 offset <>7.0 PSI. <> Better Ride & Better Traction
Benifits:
True measure

Nice Ride
Excellent Traction <> most conditions

Both work well for trail riding - mild mud & rock <> Prefer the KB ÷HTR

Now for a 3rd. Option:
ITP XTR's 1-1/8th Lug
same size as both above 27's <> 6ply <> measure 26-1/2 <> 7PSI <> 4X3 offset
Decent Ride

Better Traction in Mud & Rock ( than BH2.0 or KB HTR )

The 4+3 on futzin's sxs will have more track width than your 5+2. Same air pressure? You could add 1 inch wheel spacers to make the track width the same, his tires being 8 ply would be less tipsy than your 6 ply.

What's strange about this is that you're saying the 27" BH's don't measure true height. I originally bought 26" BH 2.0's and they measured 26 1/2" actual. Now I'm running 28" BH 2.0's and they measure 28 1/8" actual. Wondering why those 27's are so short.
BTW, I'm running 5+2's with 1" spacers on back, just to even the track width, and it's pretty stable. The 28's are 10" wide though but you wouldn't think it would make that much difference. Interesting....🤔

My personal impressions from this swap:

-the BHs are lighter (no surprise there)
-the BHs provide a more comfortable ride (very noticeable)
-the BHs tend to push in turns on dirt and gravel, and I'm just more confident in my HTRs for traction
-the BHs make my buggy feel less stable. Likely a combination of weight, wheel offset difference, tire profile, and 6 ply.

My takeaway:

-For my purposes (to maximize trail capability, within reason) I'd again choose the HTRs over the BHs for Critter.


It's really nice to be able to readily compare/contrast differences in our buggies. Another example: @KYgal83 Tusk power steering has a noticeably heavier feel than my EZ Steer.

You are correct. They have been measured by 3 different people with the same results.. I am starting to think what I have are 26”s misstamped as 27”’s. Going to call BH about it.

I've mentioned in the past that some BHs are 'adult' sizes. The 27s always look puny especially next to 29s at a CanAm dealership on similar machines. They do look 4" shorter. 26x11s look all of 26. Those 28x10s look real. If running 7" rims I'd run the 11s on all fours......

Thanks for the comparison and thoughts. On my P500 I run HTRs sized 27x11x12s on 5-2 rims on all corners, typically with 6-7 psi air pressure. Rides and handles (I think great), what I do notice is the front tires seem to last longer and I do rotate front to back periodically. Steering effort is not much different than 9” wide fronts. No difference now with E steering…. Notice radials ride way nicer and have more traction than previous bias ply tires. Are the 4-3s compared to 5-2s noticeably more stable?

I did not think the offset would make a difference but I do notice it. I will be going to the 4+3s regardless of what I do about tires.

We have completed several rides now so I will do an update sometime this weekend. Also been talking with Big Horn about the size inconsistency.
