Confirmed, The Honda Talon transmission gearing is the same as the Pioneer 1000. Almost!
So why is the Honda Talon expected to run 73+ mph while the Pioneer is stuck at 66?

HONDA... that's why.

Many who have pushed the top speed on a Pioneer 1000 knows there is more to be had. But the computer shuts it off at 66.
Ironically that's gear 6, 66 mph! :eek:

REAR DIFFERENTIAL
The rear diff gearing changes from 3.375 to 3.307 in the Talon. This with a speed tolerance increase and larger tires helps drive the Honda Talon above 70 MPH stock.

Can this be upgraded for the Pioneer? Most likely no.
It would require a reprogramming and differential gears are not swappable.

REVERSE.
Honda says
Even the reverse gear has been optimized for Sport use for easily exiting from tight situations.
The reverse gear changes from 2.222 in the Pioneer to 2.640 in the Talon. This provides for lower gearing for "tight situations". One that was highly needed and wanted by many Pioneer owners!

Can this be upgraded for the Pioneer? WE THINK SO!
But it is still too early to know for sure. It would come down to if there are any case improvements and if not, then its as simple as changing 2 gears in the sub-transmission and that should do the trick!

Right after the talon was intro'd I was going to post wondering if the lower reverse would be implemented into the Pioneer, but then i realized the 2019's were already out. Maybe 2020?

Question for the current P 1000 owners. Since the gearing info is out and Talon/Pioneer are virtually the same.. How do you expect the Talon to perform with 31" tires, in low range, in environments like Royal Blue, Windrock TN? I have already done some searching in the P 1000 forum, and saw some comments that they performed OK with 30" tires, and others saying 30" required an internal gear reduction. Primarily, how do the clutches hold up with 30-31" tires? Did the service bulletin by Honda that improved the clutches (was that an oiling improvement?) seriously help the long term reliability of the clutches?

This is probably my #1 question with the Talon. Tire size and gearing. Thanks

Honda has said that you can run 30” tires during a review I saw, don’t remember which one. I plan on running 32’s but may get a surprise. Every 2” increase from 28’s is about 8% taller geared. 8% isn’t much but 16% may be pushing it requiring running in low range more of the time. Low is 40% lower than high range so with 32’s that would put low range 24% lower than high if my calculations are correct!

I'm fairly sure honda has spent their time torturing the clutch this go around. It hit them like a brick s... house with the Pioneer. Actually. The improvement has helped almost eliminating any issues out side of 32" + tires without modifications.

As for gearing. The Pioneer 1000 starts to have trouble above 30's. That's 4" above factory. If same translates. Then 32's should be the max to go without gearing modifications.

Hopefully the IGR will fit like a glove and we will be all set.

Well it sounds like they have the clutch issues pretty sorted out. That is good news. However, if the Pioneer starts to struggle above 30", the Talon may as well since the gearing is identical. Clutch slipping until 1st gear is fully engaged is my concern. Slow rocky hill climbs where you can't build speed. My goal for the Talon is a 31" tire, but a heavier one, a truck tire Super Swamper LTB

Yep, the exact same concern I’m having in the very steep rocky climbs. Really wanting an IGR for sub trans that only reduces low range....then 31” tires.

You might be in luck (kind of). There is a Sub-Trans IGR available for the Talon and Pioneer that reduces Low and Reverse but not high. $1250 and you have to send in your Sub-Trans for machining and metal treatment...

No, it is an older post way back from March 12th. I despise Facebook for this very reason and for the life of me cannot understand why anyone would totally run their business on that platform. Post stuff and promote on Facebook?, sure! Run a business there?, useless for that use if you ask me. Not even sure how you go about ordering from them. Messaging???

I do not know the answer to that question.
They are the only ones I know of working on such an IGR for ST. But they seem only to be on Facebook which I don’t have/do and never have. Another forum member passed along Jordan’s cell phone number, but he doesn’t respond to inquiries that way....🤷‍♂️

That's good to hear. Potential customers shouldn't have to jump through hoops to give someone their business.

I'm not quite ready to go the IGR route just yet, it seems like the aftermarket is just starting to warm up to the Talons (happy to see that).
