Someone has to have done this. I'm looking at mounting a variable speed radiator fan to the bottom side of my Bad Dawg aluminum roof. I have plenty of room. Concerned with noise with a Low High speed fan, wanting a variable speed fan. What is anyones thoughts?

Well, after two failed tries with Amazon I finally got the right fan from an Ebay seller. Also bought the controller from Ebay. Fan come today and I got everything wired to function check. It's gonna be fantesticle. Fan can be variable speed controlled and it quiet even on the highest setting.

Controller, I bought the Panlongic as shown above.
Cheap and works perfect. Has an off position, fan starts turning when switched on and increases as voltage is applied just as it should. I have a spot picked out for it but will take recommendations. Needs to be protected as best as possible from water. I don't think rain or splashed water will contact it but I may forget and hit it with a water hose. Cost $10.59 delivered.

Fan, I did a lot of research on this one looking for a quiet fan that is water but manly dust proof, had to be low profile for my head with helmet to clear. This one is 12" puller with 909 CFM and is IP68 rated I ended up paying around $20 more but I'm pretty happy with my Spal Model 30100467.

This much offset is needed to get full air flow. I still have plenty of headroom. Total height the way it sits is 4". The springs will double as an anti vibration device. Fan cost was $78.43 delivered. Wiring was already here. Typical female spade connectors will enable the use of the wiring plug.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll have everything mounted. Then we will see how everything holds up. This may end up being the most satisfying mod on the Honda.

Look for the roof mod next.

Could you provide a link to the controller?

Make sure no ladies hair gets sucked into it.
That definitely won't be happening.

Got the fan mounted tonight. Wife talked me into mounting it in the center. Even though it really puts out a lot of air I wish I had mounted it on my side and bought another fan. I'll probably end up doing that. I hope one controller will work with two fans.

I got four holes in the roof but they are just big enough to get those plastic rods through, it will be an easy patch. Then again, I could just leave it and buy me another fan for my side only. 🤣

I believe this is the minimum limit on standoff distance to get the full air flow potential of the fan. I say this from experimenting with two small bolt/nuts I had that enabled me to adjust the height of the fan.

This will be fantastic when I'm forced to put the windshield down.

Top of the roof. The wire rods come in a kit. Foam tape is between the head and roof.

Here's a better photo of the foam piece. No choice on wire tying the springs together, had nothing else long enough.

This attachment method may or may not hold up on the trail. Only time will tell. For now it it pretty sturdy and solid way to mount the fan.

Nothing exciting today. Too hot so I just made the bracket to hold the controller in place. I'll get a photo of the bracket later, nothing fancy. Here is the location (in yellow) the controller will be set. I will fit flush with the top and back. Should be out of the way and easy to get too. Looks like the phone holder will be in the way but it won't. If forced to, I can mount a second controller on the other side.

Also, bit the bullet and bought another fan like the one I have. I already told the wife about my devious plans to mount the fan above my head and she didn't like it. As long as she doesn't start a riot and burn the house down I'll make it.

Wow, the fan showed up today. After testing I'll need to get another controller. The controller will run two fans but at reduced speed. Since I'm going to have two fans and need more wire I believe I'll go with a 4 wire trailer harness, this will keep both sets of fan wires in the same sleeve for a better and neater looking wire route.

I'll either paint the brackets or try that plasti dip stuff.

Extra photos for extra credit. My CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow. Added the rear adjustable sight and blue aluminum thin grips. This is my favorite center fire handgun out of all the ones I have.

Well, no work on the Honda today, or I should say yesterday. All I did was shoot my guns, 550 rounds to be exact. I did get the 4-wire harness on the way from Zoro. Went with 16 AWG Copper, this will make for a lot neater setup plus better wire protection with the extra layer.

BTW, in case anyone was wondering the total amp draw on the fan is 6.8 amps.

Wire should get here today. The second controller is all that's left. If the rain holds off I plan on running the wires from the fans down to were the controllers will be mounted. I'll probably go ahead and wire up one controller. Got the second fan install last night. This is going to be good.

Well, got everything together and running today. One side blowed 3 fuses before I traced it back to a bad Pos Buss terminal. After I figured that out both are running perfect. I have them protected with a 15 amp fuse. Both fans takes about 3 volts to start turning and they max out at 11.84 volts. If someone wants to try this keep in mind you can't wire directly to the battery because the controller is on when power is supplied. Power to the fan doesn't start until the knob is turned. Time will tell me if I have a weak spot in the system. Below is the finished project with dialog if needed.

Running the fan wires. Glad I bought the 4 wire harness. I'm debating on to keep the red zip ties or change them out to black.

Coming through. I measured where I needed the hole to be drilled. Fishing the wires through this way was somewhat of a pain. These set when to the fan. The set going to the batter wasn't as bad to fish through.
IMG 20200915 162031

I'm thinking if something breaks it might be the controllers. Just depends on how much dust, bumping and rattling they can absorb. They were only $10 each. The brackets I made was in good shape after painting but when I took the drill to them to open up the hole the brackets twisted. They obviously still work but look even crappier now than before. But, as long as they don't break loose I'll be happy.

In case anyone is wondering about the knobs, that's just the way I put them on. Kinda like a "his" and "hers" lol.

Fans in action. I drove it around for 2 miles but nothing rough. Everything is working perfect so far. It puts out a lot of air and I'm pretty happy about the entire project.

How are these fans, mounting, switches, ect. holding up after 9 months of use?

That looks like it has the potential to be the World's first VTOL Pioneer 1000!
