P700 Roof Tops...homemade....

Hey Y'all, I would like to see some homemade Roof Tops. My fabric roof top blew off on the hyway, so now I need to replace it. I'm a cheap "ba.....", I'm thinking to fab up something with plywood. A friend has a sheet metal company, but he's really busy, he doesn't really like getting trapped with projects like these.

I haven't built my roof yet, but I picked up a sheet of 3/16 diamond plate the other day. I bought it at a salvage/recycle yard for $50. I'm going to make a metal brake (for bending the sheet) out of wood and attach it with rubber covered conduit clamps. The whole thing should run about $60. The sheet is thick enough that I'm sure I could jump on it and not cave it in. I'll post pictures after I get it built. Give me a few weeks as hunting season is still in full swing!

I had a couple sheets (4x8) of poly poster board. I cut them in place of the roof. I used 1/4” ty-raps, to the tubes. I had it on the trailer, down the hyway, at 60m/h, and it’s still in place. It cost me about 2hrs time to cut it in. It’ll prob stay in place till it rots off...

The lights are for Halloween. We live in a acreage community, we convey on quads and sxs's. Just plugin an inverter (12 volt outlet) and a string or two of LED lights...works great. you can see the inverter on the seat there....
I had the bimini before. I used a piece at the front there so the rain does not drip down the front.....

Ok, It's a 500, but the method and materials can be used the same way for a 700 or 1000.

I used 1/8 aluminum diamond plate. I marked bend locations at 1/2" increments and used a makeshift break to bend the sheet. The break was 4x4 posts with heavy hinges mounted to the loft in my shop.

After bending, I mounted it with conduit clamps and drove it for a few trips to get a feel for how much I wanted to remove from the front and rear.

After cutting off the excess, I rounded the corners and riveted on a drip edge the front and rear. The drip edges are 1/2" aluminum channel. I then ruffed the entire surface with a drill and a wire wheel. I also ground down the diamonds near the edges to allow from trim at a later stage.

Instead of paint, I opted for Rustoleum truck bed coating. I've never used it, but I figured it would be more durable than paint. On the edges, I added Trimloc edging.

The final step was mounting the light bar and mounting it to the Pioneer with rubber coated conduit clamps.

Looks good Idaho. I have been thinking if I went metal, if I could build a break outta wood, you jus' proved that one. Heck I'll prob spray my roof with box liner stuff now to make it blend in better.....

If you use wood, you will need at least a 4"x4". I'm sure anything smaller would flex too much.

That looks great! I like the light bar too - HUGE.
