A few of the guys here PM'd me about posting this so I thought I'd share.

We all know the stock air intake tube is in a horrible spot and sucks in lots of dust and makes the filters clog up fast. I've seen the S&B systems and while nice, sort of overpriced for a plastic intake and some dryer hose. So here is my solution to keeping the main filter happy in my racecar.

I ordered a Pwrtune Velocity intake kit:

You don't necessarily need this but i wanted something more than a plastic spacer for my intake boots to clamp onto and their 90° elbow has a mounting point added to strengthen it up.

I installed the above parts but cut the flare off the top of the elbow so I could slide a 3" coupler over it. Easy peasy....

Next I ordered a 12" section of 3" aluminum tube, silicone turbo coupler, clamps and a K&N filter with outer dust cover from Summit Racing. If you don't want to purchase the Velocity intake kit all you have to do is order a 90° 3" aluminum elbow when you purchase these other parts.

Mounted everything up on the car and then measured how much I was going to cut the tube down to get the filter slightly above the body work...

Once I got everything fit the way I wanted i installed the clamps and put the body work back on. I only had to notch the rear quarter slightly to clear the tube. Most of it goes up through the bed.

With the outer cover on the prefilter I dont expect to have to clean the K&N much and ill probably never have to look at the stock Honda filter ever again. 🤣

Looks good, nice job! Are you worried about the filter getting wet where it is mounted?

No. The outer cover on the K&N is water resistant if its wet out and I have no plan to race it in the pouring rain. If it were strictly for recreational use I'd probably extend it up into the roof area or add a lexan shield around it.

Thanks. I'm going to do this sooner or later. But where we ride it rains a lot, so I need to figure some kind of shield for the filter. I've looked at using a 8 quart ice bucket, and turning it upside down and mounting it on top of the filter. But honestly, I haven't even ordered the parts yet. I'm running the UNI pre filter in the air box right now.

I have a very similar setup located in same place. I have front & rear windows which may affect the amount of dirt that gets to that area. I am very happy with it. If riding in a very dusty condition I feel I need to clean the K&N at around 500 miles (I have the outwear too). Even the worst I have seen it, I had NO DIrt in the down tube when filter is removed to clean and factory filter looks like new. I carry a pre oiled spare K&N filter & cover in my trailer for multi day trips if needed. I have over 1500 miles since install and have no long term plan to need to do more than clean & oil the K&N for a long time

My prefilter is located in the same place and I rode for several hours in a steady drizzle without any issues. It was one of my first rides and I forgot it might be an issue. If I rode in a lot of rain, I'd run it up to the roof like HondaBob and others have done.

The link in my sig shows most of HondaBob's install including part numbers and exactly where I put the hole through the body panel. Note that I kept the stock air intake chamber per Bob's method. SLOWPOKE removed his, your choice.

The ice bucket idea is a good one! With the filter being rubber at the top it wouldn't take more than a large diameter washer on either side of the rubber and a bolt sticking out the top (silicone it in place to prevent dust intrusion) and mount the bucket with a single wing nut.

Post up some pictures when its done. 😁

Do you ever pull the outer cover off and run just the filter by itself?

Will do. I have trips Oct 22-25 and Nov 6-8. After that I'll start the mod.

I picked up some magnets to do something similar with my through the hood snorkel on the P1k. Magnet on the top of the filter and one on the bottom of the inside of the bucket. Haven't found a bucket yet that doesn't look...like a bucket sitting up there, lol. I meant to check out the sand toy aisle at Wal-Mart when I was at the beach a few weeks ago but forgot all about it. I think one of the smaller, more conical shaped kids buckets might do the trick.

No I have not ran without the cover because it is a small help to reject any rain that may happen. It also is a rough filter that is easy to dust off to help keep the K&N clean

Mine is under the roof . Clean air and out of the water . 2500 miles since I put it on and the OEM is still clean .

Luckily HondaBob is a good friend and did most of it .

What plastic tube is that midway up, it doesn't look like the Teryx tube, the bends are too close together? Maybe it's just the camera angle. Do you have a pic from the back? fwiw: I copied Bob's idea but didn't run mine up to the roof, yet, and why I'm asking.

First install we ran the UNI up under the roof behind the back window in the center .After a few 100 miles I decided that wasn't good enough so Bob and I came up with this idea . Bob cut the hole in the back window ( I was afraid to)and we re routed it so the filter is inside the cab and clears the roof on the inside by about a half inch . Bobs Talons don't have back windows so his are snorkeled up under the roof in the center . I wouldn't stand for it being there because I didn't want my rear view mirror vision obstructed .

What is that contraption for?

It's the belt cooling vent on a 2012 Teryx 4. We cut the goofy end off and use the 2-7/8" diameter tube for our snorkel. I don't know how @hondabob discovered that it would work.

SLOWPOKE - if this is a highjack, I'll remove it - I posted here because of the pre-filter title.

And now the questions for HUCK. I'll start with 'I really like Bob's snorkel idea and have shared the photos of my copy 'over and over' because it's a great solution.
1. What's the part marked with a ? - that's not a Teryx tube, the bend is too sharp?
2. Since this is a constantly evolving idea - using one bend of the Teryx tube, I was able to come straight up through the body panel. If you did that, you wouldn't need the ? bend, you could use the lower rubber joint to lean the tube straight to the hole in the back window.
3. What back window is that? I want one and it would be great to know that it's 'cutable'.
4. I like that filter location. 👍

I moved mine out as well. I got the idea to go through the small side grate from a few different YouTube videos. I bought an aluminum intercooler kit from Amazon for $100. The kit had enough pipe in it for 2 machines. It sits about a half inch off my back window.
