Studded Tires

I am still running the Big Horns that machine came with. I am thinking about studding them for this winter. I have read a couple threads on this but nothing very recent. I would like to know what studs or screws anyone has used. Then it will give me an excuse to get new tires next spring. If I get new tires I will probably need bead locks, shocks and a arms too lol.

Haven't heard of anyone studding them. Some guys run chains though.

planning in going on some ice or just mainly snow?. might check into a different set as a winter set that are studdable. i know they have different sets that have holes already in the lugs themselves for a pressed stud. unless your talking about unmounting and screws with a tube or something of that nature. i know a little bit about it but havent really looked into it cause -monster truck donuts lol. a set ofchains would be a good buy for deep snow

I ride from home up the Forest service road. Mainly road ride in the winter and out on the lakes for ice fishing. So mainly ice and packed roads.

Icy hard pack snow. Not really interested in going into the deep snow.

So is it a special tire you have to buy that has holes in the tires knobbies to put those screws in. And then can be removed after winter and the tire then functions as a typical off-road UTV tire again?

I am not concerned about using the tires again for regular use. I will keep them as winters. Just looking for people that have experience with this.

No special tire. Just screw them directly into the lugs. They come in different lengths as appropriate for your lug height. Just know this, they will scratch up your driveway or garage floor!

I don’t go up the hill very often in the winter but when I did last year a couple times you couldn’t even stand on the road it was so icy. I’m getting tires and rims for next riding season so I thought I would make a set of winters with studs.

Another thing to keep in mind, if you have locked rear differential and only stud the rear tires, you will have no steering on ice. The studded, locked rears will just push you in a straight line.

Yes I would definitely stud all four.

I’ve done lots of ice fishing and never needed any traction aid at all. I’ve got factory Bighorn take offs.

on glare ice ok maybe a need but even then I haven’t had issue pulling my ice house out either.

You've never been in a situation on the ice where extra traction would be helpful, and you pull an ice house 🤔. Must be perfect ice all the time where you are. In Wisconsin, we get every possible ice condition, and I have been stuck several times. I've found the best solution is a shovel, and tire chains on all four wheels.

I’m thinking that ice fishing would be on level surface. My interest in this idea was for trail riding where traction is lost as soon as you begin an incline…..🤔

Exactly what I'm talking about. The Forest Service Road I use has quite a few steep sections. I am not so concerned about traction going up, but more with gearing down and braking coming down the hill into corners. This is where I had a couple close calls last year.
