Vacuum leak detected

Troubleshooting my 2003 Rancher after top end rebuild.

Here’s what I learned as symptoms of a vacuum leak.

1. Idles rough.
2. When choking it revs up when it should flood out
3. While idling, spray ether (starting fluid) at suspect areas. If it surges, you found the leak.

And it works!

In my case it was the carburetor intake boot.

Do at least adjust the valves please. If one is not closing fully, it can burn the valve/seat. Really easy to do.

Valves included.

Lots of valve to piston clearance on these vs race bikes.

Rubber O ring, back in place...

And he’s the kicker...

That carb intake boot can’t be installed just any ol’ way... The hole isn’t centered. I had 50/50 chance during rebuild to get it right. I got it wrong.
Realized the err of my ways when I took her down to put the O ring back in.

Now the Rancher purrs like a kitten.

I rerun the Cosby in a can, test.
No rev-ups!!!

Idle is sewing machine smooth. I turned the idle screw down.
