The only special tool you need to inspect them is feeler gauges.

If adjusting the exhaust you'll only need a 9mm wrench and square drive driver. Motion pro makes a set that includes these two.

If adjusting the intake need you'll a couple more tools to get the camshaft out.

To inspect you'll need:
24mm socket (flywheel hole cap)
17mm socket (flywheel bolt to turn engine over)
6mm Allen socket (timing hole cap)
10mm socket (seat and valve cover removal)
Phillips head screwdriver (airbox removal, trust me its easier that way)
Clip removal tool (flat blade screwdriver works, various plastic removal)
A couple extensions helps as well and a light.

Wow seems crazy you have to pull camshaft to adjust valve! Is the 700 this way too? Plan to check mine here soon while doing oil change.

Only the 1000 and Talon, the intakes are shimmed on those machines.

The 700 is screw adjusters on both.
