While going up a very steep hill the unit seemed to stay in second or high gear. It stalled and the wheels would not spin. A dealer in Delta Junction Alaska told me that you have to tap the bakes to make it shift down.

Hmm haven't heard that. Have you tried the brake tapping method? Did it work? Mine will hold a high gear longer than I'd like but it does down shift eventually.

That's really strange, it usually won't stay in a higher gear for me.

When going up a steep sand dune mine would be making great headway, then upshift to 3rd until it lost all momentum, then shift down to 2nd or 1st and spin the tires and dig holes. But it did downshift. Wish i could have held 2nd gear all the way to the top, and caught air over the top of the dune

never had trouble with mine not down shifting but I have had it down shift when I didn't really want it to in snow and end up getting stuck

Punch the gas and let off before hitting a hill then get back into the gas the goose of the throttle will make the computer hold the lower gears longer

I'm finding the same thing to be true with mine. The 700 isn't Hondas best model. I've found that feathering the gas helps on this.

Got some bad news, it's in the lowest gear. It's just a three speed and first is high.

no problem with mine downshifting, sometimes it seems to hold a gear a lot longer than I would like when lightly accelerating, but it has always downshifted as needed.

That seems to be the problem right there, no low and high transmission position, very odd. Makes the P7 a good utility vehicle for work, but not terribly suited to the trail riding I do.

Mine downshifts fine when climbing seems to do better if I don't keep it hammered

Does anyone have access to a schematic for the 700-4 with the paddle shifter?

Paddle shift would eliminate your problem, why I purchased the newest model!

I'm thinking the OP was likely in 1st gear and just didn't realize it. This is the big red "F" on the 700's otherwise good report card.
