Figured I would start a thread to document my build.
This week I mocked up my bed to accommodate the side mount toolbox I got

Used 3/4” birch plywood as the bed, and 2x12 for the sides and tailgate. Kicking back and forth ideas now, most likely am going to do a diy spray in bed liner on all the wood, and debating wether to use the Honda rack clamps, or to just drill through the rack and bolt to it. Also considering using Simpson strong tie gussets angle brackets to strengthen my set up- credit for idea of this setup to Appalachian mountain riders on YouTube.

Got a little further on the box build. I ended up using Simpson strong tie brackets to beef this thing up since i’m Planning on mounting the spare tire to the rear, I want it to be solid.

Now I just need to do some sanding and decide on bedliner or do a wood sealer & paint it black, leaning towards diy spray on bedliner. Line x quoted me $400 to spray it (yikes). Still waiting on my Honda cargo tray clamps to arrive

What are the two straps in the center doing?

Is the spare tire mount off the rear? Maybe some bracket supports at the top corners? Thru bolts/nuts vs screws. Especially for the hard bumps.

Looking awesome, really nice work. Only thing I’d suggest is a drain hole, on mine albeit a plastic containment tray with 5” sides, I drilled a 1/2” hole in one corner and installed a boat plug, works perfect. Surprising how much mud, dust and debris will get in there.
Cheers,
j

Thanks! Yeah that’s a good idea to plug with the boat plug, gonna wait to drill the hole or 2 until I see if there is a low point naturally once it’s all mounted up

Had a sheet metal pan insert in my old one, amazing how much mud, twigs and leaves find their way back there. Makes a tornado of debris with a power washer. LOL. Half of the fun with a P500 is DIY mods for sure.

Ya after I noted my suggestion I realized the front is open to the aluminum box.... Yeesh sorry. Regardless looks awesome and it’ll probably drain fine on it’s own.

That’s a really good looking rig!
Thanks, some of the best mods are not seen, (PS, Locker, Skids). You are smart to try some quick clamps for easy removal of the box as mud will collect underneath. For final finish, stain and spar varnish, paint, or thin diamond plate skin???

I was on fence about painting/staining then sealing, or bedlining. I ended up ordering raptor bedliner yesterday, so we'll see how it works out. I really like the idea of the diamond plate skin, but just not confident enough I could make it look good

Sounds good, was just thinking of the thin diamond plate I saw at Lowes the other day, cuts with jig saw. I used the tool box legs for side trim on mine.
