The sleepy little town of Timmonsville, South Carolina, has a population of just over 2300 people, but don’t let its modest size fool you: this place is a major player in the world of ATVs. That’s because the Honda of South Carolina (HSC) manufacturing plant sits on 615 acres in Timmonsville, and this 536,150-square-foot facility is producing the new Honda Pioneer 700 and Pioneer 700-4*. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg; for years, HSC has been churning out a serious quantity of Honda ATVs—machines that are distributed not just in North America, but all around the world.

How many ATVs? Well, HSC currently has the capacity to produce more than a quarter of a million vehicles and 310,000 engines every year. And since HSC began building ATVs back in 1998, it has turned out more than 2.5 million units. Thanks to the plant’s capacities for increased production and future expansion, fitting both all-new Pioneer models into the production schedule proved to be a smooth transition. In addition, HSC’s roster of big-time ATV all-stars includes the Honda FourTrax® Rincon®, FourTrax Foreman® Rubicon, FourTrax Foreman, FourTrax Rancher®, FourTrax Recon®, TRX250EX, and TRX400EX.

This is a true manufacturing plant, not just an assembly facility; processes at HSC range from welding steel frames, aluminum casting, machining cylinder heads and engine cases, to building engines and injection-molding body parts. Some components come from local suppliers and a few specialty items, such as crankshafts, come from Honda Motor Co. in Japan. All told, HSC stands tall as a major center not just for ATV production, but also for manufacturing in the United States.

With such a massive output, HSC has obviously created a huge impact on the off-road community. But there’s much more to what HSC does; there’s also a prevailing philosophy of conducting its day-to-day business in ways that build up the local community and improve the environment, because Honda’s vision is to be a company that society wants to exist and benefits society as a whole, beginning at the local level. To that end, HSC associates have supported the local Baker Memorial Library, donated equipment and in-kind labor hours to work in the local Boys and Girls Club Center, donated school supplies and volunteered hours to read for the Brockington Elementary students in Timmonsville, plus much more. HSC has also given more than $2 million to charities and local non-profit organizations, spends more than $400 million annually in purchases from American businesses, and has given more than $5 million in education taxes. HSC has also made concerted efforts to integrate wildlife habitat into its 615-acre site by participating in the W.A.I.T. (Wildlife And Industry Together) program—a cooperative effort created by a partnership between the South Carolina Wildlife Federation, Duke Power, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the National Wild Turkey Federation.

The associates at HSC clearly recognize the large role they play in creating Honda’s “Best on Earth” ATVs for off-road recreation, hunting and farming in some rural areas, and they take great pride in seeing the end products that are a reflection of their skilled handiwork. More importantly, the associates at HSC have worked hard to create a spirit of teamwork within the plant as well as with the community as a whole—and that’s a result they can savor even when they’re off the job.
