I’ve tried searching, and don’t find a video or comments on replacing the rear CV boots. Two questions first is it as simple as lifting it, and removing the two bolts and nut on the bearing holding the wheel hub and remove replace boots?

Second, Honda OE parts are $148 for both boots on 1 side (2 boots). There’s lots of other suppliers for a fraction of the cost. Are the aftermarket as good as the Honda, and can anyone recommend some place where you got them?

Thanks.

One of my front boots was ripped up. Took it to a local atv shop and they replaced with a whole new aftermarket axle for around $175 if I remember right. That's all I got.

Thanks for the great advice! I checked amazon and there were several after-market axles. I checked SuperATV and they sold the HighLifter and I could order direct from HighLifter with 10% off initial order and free shipping. $88.15 total.

I found an axle replacement video. A few more questions.

It appeared that the axles pull out/ slide back into the housing and the oil seal is an O ring on the shaft. Correct?

Is there any registration on the splines or does it fit in any orientation?

Will differential fluid escape when I remove old axle? Should I change the fluid at the same time with 7 year old unit and under 5k miles? Honda fluid?

While I’m doing the work, is there anything else to check or adjust while the axle is out?

Thanks

$148 seems high. I just bought a Honda oem boot kit for rear axle on my 1000-5 for $73 from RMATV. Came with both boots, the clamps and grease

The "o-ring" you see is actually a spring clip, it is what keeps the axle in the housing. There is no orientation or clocking, just line up the splines and slam it home. You shouldn't lose much if any oil, the full level is lower than the axle height.

Thanks, I saw the RMATV boots when searching. I think for $15 more, replacing the whole axle and getting new cv joints plus the boots made sense.

I’m assuming if SuperATV sells the HighLifter axles, they’re well made vs. the ones on amazon.

U can’t hide money

Imo

for what it’s worth - aftermarket axles are not as good as stock OEM axles in terms of quality and life expectancy, so don’t drink the kool-aid hype of if it’s aftermarket it must be better.

If moose racing, RMATV, Honda, etc. make a replacement boot - it’s not that big of a job other than removing the axle, plenty of utube videos of how to disassemble and replace to educate yourself

for me - it’s a ripped boot, get a new one - for $30, swap it out and move on

good luck and glad u found the busted boots

Boots aren't that bad to replace. I recommend using the Oetiker clamps like the oem ones. Those strap band clips are a giant pain to me, but people use them successfully, somehow.

If you do buy new axles, be aware that many on the aftermarket are subpar. Cheap is cheap.

Even if you do replace it with a new axle, reboot the one you have and keep it as a spare.

Looking back at your pic, I can't really tell but it looks like a pretty big hole in the boot. The question is, how long has it been there and how much damage has it caused? Even so, how many miles are on the axle anyway?

That's why so many just go for the new axle. The amount of work you're going to do is the same for uninstall/ reinstall and you get to skip the greasy work.

I like having backup axles myself. Can't stand down time.

I figure that SuperATV sells a dependable axle and doesn’t get returns/complaints- that’s why I purchased Highlifter.

That’s a great idea to put a new boot on the old axle as a backup!

I’m not sure what’s going on with the axle and boot- I figured I’d fix it and inspect when removed.

In the picture there’s only dirt on the left side- when I touch it it’s greasy- probably the grease from the cv joint. I only spotted the problem a few days ago.

For a P5 you're fine w cheap or aftermarket axles, they don't have enough power to break anything. Ironically, I got more miles out of the $125/pair Amazon axles than I did the OEM ones. I had an OEM axle lose an inner CV, popping & clunking, at 2500 miles. Swapped both axles, it now has over 6500 miles. 🤷‍♂️

I got the new axle in today, not a difficult project. I followed what this fellow did.

The old axle came out gripping with a pair of gloves and a good tug.

The only difficult/tricky part was aligning the new axle and sliding/ tapping the axle into the housing alone. I put a 2x4 under the boot and used wood shims to get it in the correct horizontal position, then I tapped it in. In the video he has a second guy align it while he taps it in.

The old axle’s boot was ripped, I’m trying to decide if I’ll put a new boot on it as a future spare, or toss it out and buy a new axle if needed.

I figure I got a new axle instead of a new boot at the Honda dealer, saved $250 and don’t have to tow it there and home around 80 miles in Montana.

Thanks for the information and help.
