Did they cut locks to gain entry? Do you know if they drove a vehicle in? Do you have any dogs that would alert?
In the situation you describe, where it looks like they planned and were well organized, it would not be surprising if they were not armed as well. Good idea to keep this in mind, as well as the laws in your state, in planning your response to this type of thing. My background is in electronics (Navy) and law enforcement (Oakland CA, PD), so I tend toward being brave, armed, and stupid (grin). I live in a small up-scale gated community. The bad guy in the short video, linked below, came in on foot. He's shown trying my back garage door. Next he goes out of camera frame and opens a side RV garage door, which I intentionally leave unlocked. There's an alarm system covering all openings, so as soon as he starts to open the door, the nearby keypad is beeping - he fled at that point. The door in question also has a steel cable loop over the doorknob on the inside, the the door only opens a few inches - sort of a "trap" that allows the bad guy to trip the alarm without damaging anything. In my experience, most bad guys will check things to see if you screwed up and left them an easy way to get in.
