I have run across some technical documents this week in regards to the Honda Pioneer 1000. This document discusses the development and design of the Honda Pioneer 1000. Though most of the info is already widely known I figured a quick recap on some of the information that may not be would be nice.
Posted below are 20 technical facts about the Honda Pioneer 1000 drive train. Read through them and let me know what you think!

- When designing the Pioneer 1000 Honda has several goals in mind. -Affordable -Lightweight, -High Power, -Fast Acceleration, -Impressive transmission.
- To be affordable, units share common parts. Excluding the bed areas between the 3 and 5 seat.
- To achieve the high power, Honda included the largest displacement engine on the market. 999cc’s
- An overhead, Unicam, valve train was chosen vs a DOHC, this maintained performance while maximizing space.
- To create the perfect weight balance the engine was placed under the front seats with the cylinder head and air intake placed unconventionally at the rear of the engine
- The park dog is built into the outside of the low range gear dog thus reducing the need for an extra "park" gear. Similar to Honda Automobiles.
- A dry sump system was used allowing for proper lubrication at steep angles of operation.
- The oil tank was connected to the engine thus eliminating the need for hoses and pipes and allowing for additional cost savings.
- The oil pan was designed to be flat helping with space the low center of gravity.
- The ECU has eyes on almost everything. It collects data from sensors all around the machine the instant it is turned on.
- Clutch rotation speed, clutch oil pressure, vehicle speed, throttle position, and oil temperature are some of the factors used to best control the DCT.
- Enhanced DCT speed sensors were used effectively increasing the sensing by 300%
- When opening and closing the throttle, the oil pressure is lowered for a split second. (about 300ms) this allows for smooth engagement of the unit eliminating hesitation felt with standard clutches.
- In cold weather the unit is able to adjust the oil pressure based on the current velocity of the oil.
- The ECU has programming to predict cornering and is able to control the shift pattern based on its speed.
- Programming was introduced to maintain clutch engagement when decelerating allowing for engine braking.
- The "down shift" pattern is adaptive and will change based on how fast the vehicle is decelerating further enhancing the effect of engine braking.
- The shifting pattern changes based off your current drive mode and style. Low gear provides a more active shift pattern while high AT was designed for ease of use and Sport mode is for just that, a sportier style.
- The ECU learns your driving habits and is able to adjust the automatic shifting pattern to fit a user’s riding style.
- When in AT mode you can override it by operating the paddle shifters. The unit automatically returns to the appropriate timing based on the drive speed delivering a more comfortable ride.
