I just started having this issue about a month ago put 3 starters in it adjusted valves thought I was good to go on the second one. The original one fell apart bolts on side where loose the gear stripped replaced with a different one lasted approximately 20 starts gear stripped. Adjusted the valves got another one used for a couple weeks seamed to be doing good until yesterday. Was out fishing relays froze thawed them put back in rolled over a bit wanted to start but would kick back once in a while broke magnets in that starter had another one put on started 3 times kicked back broke the magnets in that starter. The last two where cheap starters the first one was not a honda but it wasn't a 50 dollar one. Some people said to put a honda starter in just have trouble spending that much and have it happen again. Trying to figure out what is causing the kickback seems like that is what is taking them out. As for the original it was kicking back with that one also I just assumed that the starter was falling apart. Any ideas what would be causing the kickback when trying to start. Figured it was the valves. But thinking something else now. It runs fine when it starts just can't keep a starter in it. Just looking for a place to start. Cam, torque reducer, flywheel. Also did do oil changes after replacing the ones with stripped gears. Also seams like the one the gear stripped in was caused from the kickback not from rolling over that starter still works on the bench just the gear is stripped. Any input would be appreciated.

Any chance you used the search function at all?
This very subject is covered in great detail if you search.
Good luck with your project.

Yes but other than changing the cam, torque reducer, clutch flywheel and starter nobody gave a definite answer to what the problem is. Some people changed the torque reducer and still had starter problems.

Well s*** those don't help.
Has anyone found the issue causing this and resolved it ?
Let's hope the Pioneer Family has some good answers.

How many miles on this thing and have you ever had the cam replaced ?

Also - u have any pics of the machine u can share with us - love sxs porn

if that thing has a decompression release on the camshaft - I’d check to see if decompression is working since it’s easy to check to rule that out

It has 5555 miles 619hrs. Never had any problems until now other than oil changes and regular maintenance. And the relays freezing when I'm ice fishing I usually carry a extra set in my pocket. Yeah I'll probably tear it back apart next weekend and see if the decompression is working. Sorry no pics.

Is it possible that u turn the engine over by hand and look at exhaust valve and see if it bumps a little before opening?

Just thinking about decompression mechanism, bent push rod, etc…..

I am going to throw out the obvious and ask what your cranking voltage is?
The batteries in these things suck ass to be honest.
Just a suggestion as I went to a full on struck battery under the drivers side seat and it helped me alot.
Just throwing it out.

Stock battery works fine for all of my customers, the machines not meant to run a whole trucks worth of equipment.

The charging system isn't strong enough to support that much battery anyway.

Yeah i just have the original style battery in it but is a few years old now and I actually just ordered a new one after the second starter went out. While I was charging the battery before I tried it with the last starter.
