Anyone using oil other than Honda oil? Many folks use the Shell Rotella in metric motorcycles including Honda. I do also but this is my first experience with the Big Red. Thoughts? Some think Roltella is superior??. While we're at it what are thoughts on Syn oil? I have no intentions of doing that but would like to hear your opinions. Thanks

Limbuck,
Welcome to the community. I have always stuck to Honda GN4 in all my ATV's. 300, 500, 680, 700sxs. Not why just never did. Figured the Honda oil was the best.
But others have. We'll see if we can get some of them to respond.

Thanks for joining.

Synthetic is superior in every way except price. That doesn't mean you will have troubles with regular dino oil, so its up to you.

I think the real problem will be finding the proper viscosity. Amsoil makes a 10-30, so that may be the one. I know i sound like a broken record, but i don't think you want a 40 weight oil unless you live in he!!. The reason i say this is that whenever someone complains about the shifting/bogging/slipping in this tranny, they have almost always gone to a thicker or improper oil.

One thing you need to take into account when using an oil is that it is specified for a wet clutch.
DO NOT USE SLICK50.

Or any other type of "Snake oil". All you need is the proper type of oil in the right quantity, and to change it when needed. That's the best you can do for your machine.

Thanks all. Fixin to do first oil change. And I'm glad to be on the forum. I have a Red F6B also and a lot of previous Honda history. So far my Big Red has been great for work on my farm and mountain land.

I Just switched Amsoil 0W-40. Shifts nice.
I ended up using Honda synthetic, Mobil 1 motorcycle, Amsoil, and rotella T6 over the miles. All represented a warm-up time and shift improvement from the OEM dino oil. though i can't say any of them seemed better than the other with the exception that T6 was cheaper.

Bought some Rotella T6 fully synthetic 5W-40 the other day. Stuff sounds good for just about anything. It's going in the F250 powerstroke, toyota pickup, Yamaha Wolverine 350, & Kawasaki ZRX1100. I don't think my P500 is even broken in yet though. Maybe when later when its got some miles.
