So I’m new to the sxs world. I recently purchased a pioneer 700-4 and I’m ready to dive into the winch world. Obviously an overwhelming endeavor with so many products on the market. For my use, i mostly trail ride. Not to much mud riding but some. I don’t see needing it terribly often but would like it as an insurance policy.

I’ve been looking into the zxr 3500 and was wondering if it is enough winch, a good winch in general, or look at something different? Thanks for any feedback back.

Pages upon pages of that very discussion.
That is a good winch for sure but there are alot of good ones out.
Personally I run a Badlands 5k on my 700-4.
Has always been more than enough when needed.

Thanks for the responses. I was also looking at the viper winch. It’s not to much more $$$. Man, a toss up. How easy of an install was the viper winch @Mudwing and how was the install for the badlands @Bigseff23

I also use a badlands 5k. You're better being oversized then under. Plus a 5k won't have to work near as hard so the electrical load should be smaller

I agree with this.

But, before I had a winch on my 1000-5, I pulled it out of deep mud with my badlands 3500 on my atv. Plus you could always use a snatch block when needed.

do you mud run a lot, or is it just in case?

Not a lot of mudding. Mostly a just in case. A snatch block is a great idea, just need more rope/cable

You pull the front bumper, put the wEnch and Mount on the front frame, then put the bumper back on. Run wire to the battery and mount contactor. It’s my hobby so I took my time over a couple days. Probably only 2-4 hours total. 😎

I would say from years of heavy lifting and heavy recovery that more is always better.
A rule of thumb I learned many years ago is that 2 times the loaded weight of you vehicle is minimum and more is not bad.
A P700-4 Deluxe weighs 1426 lbs, bed fully loaded 1000 lbs and 1500 lbs towed comes to
3926 lbs if one assumes double the vehicle plus load the total weight then becomes 7852 lbs.
Since that will never happen on the trail and a snatch block can double pulling power I would recommend a 5k just for piece of mind.
The high priced name brands are good but most are today. The badlands I run has never let me down or given me pause to think I should have bought a @@@@@@.
Just buy what you feel comfortable with and enjoy.
Good luck.

So I pulled the trigger and got the Viper Max 4500 and mount from the club store. I’ll post pics once it’s finished. Thx for the input everyone

I've have a badlands 3500 on my 700 for 5 years, I plow snow so its used to lift/lower the plow and it has pulled us out of a lot of mud holes. I even pulled some dumb kids honda civic out of a mud hole after he high centered it.

I always prefer the biggest winch I can possibly get to fit I have a 5k stuffed under one of my ATVs.
But before I got all winch crazy I once pulled my diesel Ram 2500 out of a muddy wash with my ATV and a 3500lb viper winch!
A sight to behold for shure. To be fair I have an extensive rigging back ground and had several chains, straps & snatch blocks as well.
It really comes down to understanding how to properly and safely use what you have. On a side note dime up for the synthetic rope it is much safer will last much longer than wire cable.

Been a busy week. I did get the Viper Max mounted. No issues at all. And mounted the remote hook up on the dash. I’m happy with how it all turned out.

Hi so curious if you got the VIper mount too and how bad it was to install, did you have to take the bumper off to install it?

Thanks

Phil

It's a good idea to NOT size something so that it's working at the extreme upper end of it's range -- for a variety of reasons, including durability, longevity, performance, etc. I have a P1K5, so I know the ZXR5000 fit just fine (I used the KFI winch mount). If it fits in the 700-4, then I'd spend the extra $40-50 (by the time you take advantage of the variable plethora of Harbor Freight discounts) on the ZXR5000. I'd also swap the steel cable with a synthetic one. :)

For me 99% of the use of the winch will be for lifting a plow, otherwise it may get used once in a great while to pull the UTV out but Ive only had to do that a couple times since I first started to use one (Rhino) 12 or so years ago. I also have a tractor so if I really get stuck I have that.
