So noticed lately the big red at starting turns over a few times but not under full speed it seems. It always started . But drive it 10 minutes and stop turn off its not starting again. Seems like not enough power from battery. Try a few more times and it will start. Can hear a click with key turn. So 3 days ago it wasn't able to be started . Sat out side away from home for 3 days . I put the key in turned and it fires up. Drive it home park in garage . Try it yesterday and it started poorly again. Drive it 10 minutes and shouldn't have shut it off. After a few walking trips to the shop battery is at 12.65 volts and drops to 11.5 when key is turned . SXS has a second battery for the winch. I tried to jump it but still doesn't start. That battery is about the same .
So I drive my 500 foreman over to boost it . 14.3 volts when running and hook up the cables . Check the lines and 14.3 v heading to the starter but will not fire up.
So is it the batteries or the starter??. I haven't got to the starter yet as it buried under the passenger seat and the SXS not at home again.

Big Reds are known for bad starters, Honda redesigned them due to this issue.

That's most likely the problem, if it has the post on the front of the starter instead of on top it's the older design.

Got it home . Fully charged battery . Still no so crank over . Got out the manual. Fooled around with it looking for the starter30 minutes to locate it . No info on net about them on the big red. Lots more under pinooeer models. Some say take out both seats and centre console . I see it better now then the flue hits . Order starter $108 on amazon.

Hit starter with a screwdriver doesn't start . tap a few more time and it starts. starts all the time now. Starter arrives . old one still working. Still sick with flue . No energy to work on it.

The starter could have a bad spot on the commutator and when the brushes are on that spot there is no electrical contact, in which case it is just a matter of time until the starter stops in the bad position again. The other possibility is that the brushes were just stuck and vibration from working on the machine freed the brush. It is not uncommon that when a starter doesn't do anything tapping on it causes it to work again, however that is usually just a temporary fix, I would change the starter if it was mine.
