So I have been shopping around for a bit and honestly have not decided for sure on the pioneer 1000 3 or the Ranger or Defender. In my shopping, I found a dealer with a left over 2016 p3 in camo for 12700. I am wondering if it is just the rear shocks that is different or other things? For the price difference I could buy Elkas. Anyone know if this is the only difference?

That's a heck of a good price for camo in California

Hey, Welcome to the club.
Yes, That is really the only difference... and a sticker stating that.
Buy it and a set of shocks you will be all good.

The extra emissions was what I was worried about. Strangely enough this is at a dealer in Oregon and nowhere near the border

Those CA emissions are a scam. They charge a couple extra grand for a new vehicle out there due to being properly equipped. Had a buddy buy a new Chevy truck here and drive it out there, had to get smog cert to register. They had to plug one of the tail pipes to even get it to register on their gizmo. o_O

I believe it is their definition of a SxS... Can only handle a max weight and towing capacity to be considered a SxS. Kinda like for a while the max CC's in WI for an ATV was 800.

California law makers are just saving S X S owner from rinding around in an over sprung and getting there brains beat out, every one knows that all California's haul around is sun tan oil and a beach blanket! HA! JUST KIDDING!

Mine is a California model. I have 70 trees in the back that range 6-8lbs each. It pulled it fine.

I just bought a California model (in Wisconsin) saved me over $4,000 off MSRP and the dealer repeatedly stated that the only difference is the shocks/springs. They said they could convert them to make it normal but I don't really care. I think it would be awfully hard to fit 1,000 pounds in the bed anyway.

From what I understand California has considers anything that has a payload capacity greater than 600 pounds to be a truck and not a UTV or ATV so in order to take it on the trails it would have to be derated.

One of my best friends is a fruit farmer, peaches, apples , grapes and what ever he has time for. Depends on how his main crops come through spring. You know all about that, I'm sure.
Lived in California for a while when I was a kid, they were still using smudge pots back then for frost.
