I've seen some folks make some interesting fire rings with the metal basket inside a washing machine. Full of holes. Another thing to look into is wood Gasification. You can run engines from wood gas.

Gasification is the trick behind the solo bonfire and this DIY stove.

That seems to work pretty good.

This is pine board it will usually smoke you out of camp. Wow, this thing burns hot and fast.

back in my camper days seems like we used to use the inside of old dryer drums as they have holes similar.
