What do you guys think is normal for the age of a P500 before it heads to the land where all Hondas eventually go to die? Is there a mileage cutoff point somewhere where it's life expectancy diminishes?

And to answer your question from my perspective,

I just sold the last two 1985 Big Red's that I had and that kid is pounding them even harder than I did so..............

I wish I had more mechanical skills. I do all the basic stuff, but for longevity of the machine I'd prefer to learn how to be self reliant and do everything myself. I was very impressed watching @CumminsPusher and family teardown and rebuild the P1000 clutch over and over. I would like to attain skills like that so I can hopefully engage the P5 many years into the future. I'd also prefer to not take the machine anywhere to get serviced. The prices they've quoted in the past for basic services are outrageous alone not even thinking about something as in-depth as what Dave did.

It’s a p500. There shouldn’t be much maintenance or work needed :) btw thank you

First thing i can recommend is getting a factory service manual.
Grab a quality set of metric sockets and wrenches. 8,10,12,14,17,19mm at the minimum.
Identify your problem and read manual. When stuck, come ask us for assistance. You will learn in no time.
Www.helminc.com for factory manual.

I see plenty of Hondas from the 80s on you tube that are still going strong. Maybe some new piston rings around 15,000 miles. I sold a rancher 400 that has over 17,000 miles and never touched the motor.

I have a Honda 175 XL, bought new in 1978. Still use it every summer as my trail bike. Speedometer broke the first year 3000 miles. Had a little lay down.

In the Royal Blue area is an ATV trail guide who has a 2012 Honda 500 Rubicon (same 475cc engine as P500) with over 47,000 miles on it. Engine has not been rebuilt. It replaced another Honda that he retired with about 64K miles on it.

It's all about maintenance and how you treat the machine.

Get the Honda Service Manual Dan, you can fix about anything on your P5 with it. Something you may have to read a couple to time to make sense and the book is only $99, pictures included.

When the service manager at the dealership says how hard it is to adjust the valves I let them do it. Maybe he’s a whiner, he left shortly after that.

Honda’s are notorious for being reliable, my p5 is only going to be mine until my son turns 11 or 12 and then it’s going to him and I’m upgrading. Enjoy your rig and focus on riding.

I don't think you can kill a Honda, I've had quite a few and haven't done it yet.....my wife claims if I can't break something it can be "Certified Indestructible" o_O

That's kinda what I was planning on as well. In a couple years I think I will turn the P5 over to my wife or son and upgrade.
