What are folks using for oil and air filters for your P520 (mine is a 2022, if that makes a difference). Do you just go with the Honda parts, or do you use aftermarket.

I'm not really a fan of K&N air filters: I've heard too much about them being good for a bit of extra power (less restrictive than OEM), but not so good at the filtering part.

Also: do you end up replacing the spring, O-rings, and drain plug crush washer every time you replace the oil filter?

I bought an Amazon oil filter and when I changed the oil the rubber gasket was smashed to the side. I just bought Oem after that. I inspect the other stuff and it’s fine to reuse. I have 2 Oem air filters because it can take a couple of days to dry after cleaning it.

Are you finding OEM air filters online? What part number are you using for your 2022 P520

I keep a set of o-rings on the shelf incase I mess one up but i don't always replace them.

Trying to buy an OEM air filter on Amazon is impossible with all the knockoffs.
The p5s use a ATV filter.
Best bet is to order by part number at one of the on line motorcycle places.

But, be careful the 500 and 520 filters use different types of "oil".
The p500 filter is yellow and comes with Dino oil on it.
The p520 filter is Grey and comes with Honda's "no toil" stuff that is alcohol based.
The no toilet stuff turns to gunck if you try to wash it out with solvent.
After you wash it out you can use either.
Just don't mix them.

Once upon a time I tried to do the no toil.
I wanted to like it.
Auto correct is wanting me to write toilet 🚻.
Even autocorrect knows it's crap.

Thanks for that info. Good to know about the special oil. What do you use to clean it, if you are not using some solvent such as gs or diesel? Just soap and water?

I finally found a Honda air filter (part # 17254-HL5-E60) and ordered it. The oil filter was easier to find.

The no toil comes out with HOT water and soap. They sell a special soap but hot water is key

Thanks for the heads up on that.

So is the usual process to use the new filter as-is, then when it's time to clean it, clean it thoroughly with hot, soapy water and oil it with engine oil? I doubt I'm going to get it together to order Honda's "no toil" stuff, unless someone is aware of a good reason to do so.

The following are my opinions, and mine only...

Air filters:
The best filtering air filter is the stock one. Both a UNI and K&N flow more air AND more dirt in my experience. As @lee said, too many knock-offs on Amazon or eBay, so unless you can verify 100% it's a Honda product, get it elsewhere.

Air filter oil:
In the early 2000's, the Honda air filter oil was some of the tackiest stuff I've ever touched. The newer stuff (as of a few years ago) seems more like baby oil and seems to have nowhere near the sticky factor. I immediately remove it from new filters and add something like Maxima FFT or comparable.
I believe the new Honda stuff is "environmentally friendly". I have yet for the environment to pay for an engine repair, so it comes second to engine protection in my book. Also, paper filter oil (K&N) and foam filter oil are NOT the same. Use foam oil in a foam filter. I also feel like widely available UNI foam oil is thinner and designed more for airflow than ultimate protection.

Oil filters:
I've got about 6500 on the current 700. 4-5k was on my 500. The previous 700 had 9k on it when I sold it, running fine. Between those, I think I may have used 3 Honda filters.
I use tusk brand from RMATV, but have used FRAM (gasps from the crowd!) and napa house brands and all were 100% fine.
I'd hit up RMATV for a genuine Honda air filter, some tusk oil filters, and a few each of the washers and o rings needed, just to have spares.

I must be bored today...
