Hi all,

Thoughts on what to look out for when considering a p700 with a higher mileage? There’s a used ‘17 700-4 that I’m interested in but it has 7400kms on it (that’s about 4500m south of the border..)
Dealer sale. Says it’s in good condition, new tires etc. Going to look at it involves a 600m round trip so I’d like to get an idea of things to look for before hand!). Price is CAD$13k. (New ones are $17k+ herr in my part of Canada)
Thanks in advance.

personally wouldn't bother, mileage doesn't bother me as much, but you don't want to be so far away on any used quad, the previous owner could have ruined it or not and the only way you will know is taking panels off checking for mud or if they took care of it or just drive it on the road wouldn't be bad.

Stay away from it. Bite the bullet and get a new one . You will have piece of mind and a for sure good machine. You never know what these guys put these things through. A new one will have a warranty and you will know where it's been. But if you already got the used one I wish you the best.

They are very durable machines but I agree with the guys, that’s too far away for that kind of money. I know a guy that put almost 11,000 hard miles on his before he had any trouble with it. Keep shopping.

4,500 miles is not much if it’s been well maintained. On the other hand, it’s a lot if it’s been abused. It’s all about the maintenance. Look at it closely if you’re interested.

And then there is the wooden camshaft in those 700s. Made of maple, I think. Did Honda ever fix that issue?
i think its a batch problem for the cam. my dad has 13 big red and i have 14 700-4. i have over 2k hard miles on mine and my dads doesnt have an odometer. but he has im willing to bet 15k+ on his. a full set of big horns stock wore down then he put my stock tire on and he really could make 1 more season but needs tires now. only motor work weve done is a jug and piston(2019) on his after it got sunk and honed with a new piston in 2014.

I'd think the price would be a bit lower with that many miles. But hey, if she's clean she's clean. Look inside the frame tubes. Manure can eat steel like salt does.

I wouldn't worry about the bad cam issue here. Mine went out around 700 miles so it was more of a metal/batch issue. So, if it's bad it's from mileage/age not a manufacturing thing. Besides....I think they had it weeded out by 2016.

The cam thing goes all the way back to the Rincon. The cam specs change in 2015, so you would hope for better materials or whatever, but I believe there have been a few '15 and up with failures.
It's very hit or miss, and it sucks that there are no definitive answers.
