Ok. So where is everyone mounting the amplifier for the aftermarket stereos. I bought a boss system and mounted the amp in behind the battery box beside the air cleaner and it didn’t last one ride. I didn’t even take it through mud or water. Any suggestions?

Honestly that's probably the boss system being what it is.

Cheap for a reason, I've never had any luck with them.

Yeah, don't buy Boss. Half the price of anything else and they're still not worth it. I had one of their amp and two speaker combos, ended up taking out the amp and hooking the speakers up to a proven Kenwood. That didn't end up working out either, their speakers are sh** too! They work if you just want sound but that's about it.

ProBox it’s all contained, waterproof and the roof is so high quality. They are not inexpensive but well worth the $$$.

I've got a JL Audio MX600/3 amp mounted under my dash in front of the steering wheel. It's a spendy amp, but it has a small footprint and is, essentially, two amps in one. It's got 2 channels for my tower speakers and a subwoofer channel with dedicated sub inputs and tuning controls.

IMG 1634

For simplicity, here are Amazon links to all the products I'm using for my audio system as well as some info on my sub box I made. However, I'd recommend reaching out to Chuck Holey with Trailstar Audio to see what he can do on pricing. He can probably save you some money if you buy through him as a package.

Head Unit:

https://amazon.com/Rockford-Fosgate-PMX-2-Compact-Receiver/dp/B0108LNLBK/?tag=sxsweb24-20

Head Unit Mounting Plate:

PBR Products fits Honda Talon 1000 3

Tower Speakers (these things are unbelievable for as inexpensive as they are):

https://amazon.com/gp/product/B01M6DAJ6Z/?tag=sxsweb24-20

Amp:

https://www.amazon.com/JL-Audio-MX600-3-Channel-PowerSport/dp/B07CB25T1D/?tag=sxsweb24-20

Subwoofer:

https://www.amazon.com/JL-Audio-10W3v3-2-Single-Subwoofer/dp/B000TDCN2Q?tag=sxsweb24-20

Subwoofer Enclosure - It's a 10" down-fire box that I custom made out of 3/4" MDF using pocket hole joinery and wood glue. It's been sprayed with Rustoleum truck bed liner for a finish and is sized to work so that I can run my soft cargo bag on top of it and also use the JEI Bed Extender to haul my cooler around. If anyone wants specifics on the sub box I have a detailed plan with parts and a cut list I can share.

Kind of ironic you went with JL Audio and then Rockville? JL is awesome audio, RV is basement audio. Kicker makes some wake speakers that will match up to the quality of that amp better. Cost more but you've already coughed it up for the head unit, amp and sub, you're just one step away from loud and clean. FWIW.

Yeah, I'm aware of what's what in terms of quality and I won't try to claim the Rockvilles are nicer than a JL/Kicker/Memphis/etc...

However, I can honestly say I like these Rockvilles better than the Kicker 6.5s I had in SSV pods (were also on my Talon). I also understand that comparing 6.5s to 8s is apples to oranges, but I've got a few buddies I ride with that have had these same Rockville 8" towers for a couple of years and you can't beat them for the money.

I'm going to run them until they kick the bucket or I sell the machine and depending on which is first I'll fork it out for a higher quality set with swivel clamps that'll pair up nicely with a Krash cage (hopefully).

Can you share the plans for the sub? After running many scenarios in my head, I'm thinking to get decent sound this type of sub is about all I can do....also how much modification needs done to get the Rockford in there? I have the same unit and looks to be a snug fit....so snug the whole cubby hole may need to be cut out?

Sure thing.

I’ve attached the file for the sub box cut list to this post.

Just keep in mind that my dimensions are specific to my setup because of the JEI Offroad bed extender and the want/need to carry cargo on top of the box so you could potentially need larger/smaller. Double and triple check the dimensions with your setup so you don’t have to do it twice.

My cargo carrying situation as evolved and I actually use Milwaukee Packout boxes on top now. I’ve added some pictures for reference.

F1CF30F2 036E 4A48 B9DB 93C128970BF1588251C5 B8B6 4825 ADE4 2D20F61DBFD3

I used wood glue and pocket holes on every joint. Also, silicone EVERY single joint on the inside before you assemble the final piece and do the best you can with it to prevent/minimize air leaks.

I used one of these as well so I can quickly disconnect and remove my box for cleaning. Again, silicone is your friend to seal it.

The sides of the box that serve as the “legs” also have cutting board feet on each corner. I did this to give just a little extra clearance and well as minimize contact with water to help prevent moisture wicking into the MDF. These are the same feet I used on my doors to alleviate door rattle.

Here’s a link to the feet:

8 Small Round Rubber Feet Bumpers... 8 Small Round Rubber Feet Bumpers W/Screws - .250 H X .671 D - Made in USA - - Amazon.com

RE: modifications to the center cubby. Yes, I basically removed the entire driver’s side half of the “back wall”. This gave me room to run all of the wires and connections through as well as provide relief space where everything wasn’t pushing back against the faceplate when I went to mount it.

I just used an oscillating tool to make quick work of the plastic.

Hope this helps!
