I cannot imagine what you thought, as a 19 year old...8,000 miles away from home. A Marine friend, who has passed, told me there were "kids" who never had flown... Flew across the country, put on ships and for weeks were sea sick and the toilets were stopped up and overflowed with vomit and feces and some stayed on deck and got sick over the railing.
Once there, they went from sandy beaches, to jungle, to mountains. It was a surreal experience. David said they were constantly wet and you got new boot laces and clothes when they rotted off.
David's photo is below. He was awarded three purple hearts and a bronze star. He maintained contacts in the Marines and from 1991 on, he was able to travel to Iraq and Afghanistan with friends who were higher ups in the Marine Corps. He was proud to fly his Texas flag tr wherever he went. He took hundreds of photos. He wanted to go support you men who had never been shot at in anger. His wife was a true angel. He suffered for years with nightmares and most wives would not, or could not hang in there. But, Jeanie did and made his life worthwhile. 🩹
