I'm just about to do my initial service on The Family Rig. What oil have you had the most success with in helping it run quieter and shift as smooth as possible? Also, any other things I should do now to help?

Use one of the oils specified in the manual, viscosity is important in newer vehicles. Tolerances are MUCH tighter than a old school 350small block. Oil viscosities and specifications matter.

I think what you're referring too for fluid change and noise reduction is in the gear oil weight and I think many are running a heavier synthetic there. The mechanic told me to run conventional motor oil after the first oil change because it has better detergents in it.. that maybe BS but it was cheaper and he had a convincing argument.. he said at the second oil change if I wanted synthetic, then to go for it. I wouldn't change the motor oil weight from factory though.

Make sure it has the JASO rating from the owners manual.

Do not use one with friction modifiers. You have a wet clutch.

Thanks guys, I will run Honda GN4 10w30 or Honda HP4S Fully Synthetic 10W30. Anyone have experience with HP4S in their 1000? I always ran that in my crf450r and really liked it. I also ran it in my Pioneer 500 but didn't notice any difference there. Not sure if its worth using or not.

Want to make sure the rings are set before swapping to synthetic. A lot depends on how you drive it. If you're real aggressive 1st oil change should be good but probably best to wait till the 2nd or 3rd. They also have the blended hp4 that I'll probably change to on the next change. Currently using the hp4s.

I was thinking just that. Just bought some GN4 and will probably go synthetic next time

if you are still under warranty i would stick to exactly what your manual and manufacture suggest. Polaris for example is known for requiring receipts of maintenance for warranty replacements on motor issues. idk if honda is as bad as Polaris is, but why risk it ya know? just something to think about.

I have been using mobile 1 European car formula 0 W 40 for over 4000 miles. I use it year round. It complies with Honda's recommend service oil.

I didn't see a JASO rating on that. Are you sure its ok for wet clutch applications?
