Since I bought my S X S Iv'e got way behind in my fire wood cutting, and I know it's Honda's fault. They built a machine that's way more fun to run than a chain saw. HA!

You only get one go round, make it count!
I didn't have time to split today but cut eight ricks ready to split. We are having a late winter, didn't start burning wood until Dec. Usually start mid Oct. I hope that will do winter so I can get back to the S X S

Yes it's been down for three years, just dragging the tops up and cutting up for fire wood after they loged it

I'm asking because I'm splitting wood now for next year. Nothing like burning seasoned firewood.
Yep, green wood is bad. We have Hickory, White Oak and Red Oak. Great wood. We use a tractor to pull it out of the holler on the flat, and then have at it. We had a bad ice storm a few years back, don,t think we'll run out of wood in my life time.

I prefer green wood in the winter because it holds a fire longer . But I have a Hardy outside furnace. If it fits through the door I can burn it.

I burn fir. The problem with burning green wood is that it creosotes your fire box and chimney. The reason it appears to burn longer is that you have to boil the water out of it before the cellulose actually burns. You're losing heat by having to boil the water out. You get a cleaner, longer, hotter burn if you use seasoned wood and just reduce the air to the fire once it's going good. I'm no expert but I've been heating with wood for 30 years and have made all the mistakes. And hopefully learned from afew of them!

I've got so many standing dead oak and hickory from the hard drought a few years back that I'm splitting seasoned wood for this year. Did that last year too.

That's true, I certainly add green wood to the fire as I go, especially banking at night.

If I end up burning some wet or somewhat green stuff at the end of the year, only if I'm short on wood, I really need to make sure the chimney is clear, it packs it right up.

I guess the outside burners I've heard green wood isn't as much of an issue.

My wood stove is a newer epa certified (Yippy) stove and it doesn't like green wood at all. The only way i can burn green wood is if I start with dry get it really going and then add one piece in at a time. If I shut it down at all the glass turns black and my chimney starts building up. Which reminds me... I need to sweep it soon.

With an outside furnace the box does get some creosote when it sets and smolders but once the draft blower kicks in it burns it out. My chimney is about 24 inches of stainless steel pipe. It don't cake much
