If it didn't matter, Honda wouldn't take the trouble to run a dedicated winch ground on the 2017 models back to the motor.

That's just a convenient spot to ground a winch (without a second battery installed) while not having to jack with more connections to the stock battery. Honda doesn't expect everyone to have a dual battery setup. It's all 6 of 1, half-dozen the other either way. I'd just prefer a shorter wire back to the "actual" ground which happens to be the negative terminal of the main battery.

I ran one wire to the negative on the OEM battery and grounded one to the frame.

Here’s the frame ground, it goes through the plastic into the frame behind the auxiliary battery.

That's never a bad thing, but...
I guess my point is that the only reason to ground the second battery to the common ground is so the stator can charge the second battery when the isolator is "connected". In a dual battery setup with an isolator, there's no reason to send battery#2's current through the frame, engine block, etc. when the isolator cuts off. All of your draw is coming from the secondary battery directly at that point.

My two cents says that personally I agree with MBJEEP.

I much prefer a shorter run ground wire to a good location, then I do a much longer run to a maybe better location.

In the world of battery cables, length is everything!
