Well my suggestion to anyone trying to do what you're doing is a 91-93 cummins all the way for the money. Up to 24mpg all the power to pull what you have and massive dependability especially with manual. I loved ours but it was a little brutal for everyday driving so I went as New as possible with the 12 valve but sure miss throwing the Pioneer in the bed. That damn truck didn't care.

I have a friend that had that vintage Dodge w/Cummins and it was a beast, reliable as anything out there... not uncommon to see them with half a million miles and still going. Yeah a bit of a rough ride but they are great trucks.

May get another just for that someday but I'd go 2x4 and take it in good weather.

No. You keep thinking that lol. I had my 93 over 100 with Pioneer into Montana The trick...91 up. Prior no overdrive.

It's just frustrating there's no such thing as a crew cab till the 3rd gens. Kinda limits the options if you need 4 doors.
For 6 months in 98 dodge made the extra door in there extended cab open up and you could still get the 12v in it. They are pretty rare and people want a lot for them. But they are out there. A budy of mine drove from wa to az to buy his.

Mine is that 98 with 4 doors. It's not the 98.5. The half year newer truck decreases value by about 3000 because of the 12v replaced with the 24v. I like many others but swear by that motor 98 is as new as I go myself.

I had a 96 for about ten years. And other than having to put a clutch in it. It was bullet proof till the frame broke. It had just rolled over 300k. Now i have a 04... Wanted the crew cab

@scott check out CM truck beds, thats what i bought.
I bought the model with the skirts. It has 4 small box's.
They are not cheap! But after buying mine i know why they are almost impossible to find used.

Man that crew cab first gen is sweet! Now y'all feel my pain. I love our camper, and my half ton Ford isn't quite enough truck to load the pioneer in the bed. I need a long bed 1ton flat deck too. I'm a cheap ass though and not spending the cash, so we are going to convert a short bus.

I love that first gen too. I've seen a couple of those people converted. Definitely not a ton of options for what we're asking.
