Never seen a Cummins have to be plugged in to start, although it is better on the engine because the oil flows easier and quicker. A lot of the older 7.3 fords would not start unless plugged in, either because of glow plug system problems or injectors. Sometimes weak batteries would cause a no start.

Funny how the Cummins has never needed them. And the 7.3 added an air inlet heater like the Cummins in the later models.
Grid just doesn’t fail very often, much better setup, I forget to use it most of the time and never plug in anyways.

The 7.3 didn't start for s*** in the cold. Or anything below 40 degrees

I know the 2019 Cummins has 16.2-1 compression but it used to be 17.2-1 I think. The 7.3 was 17.5-1 compression. Not sure but the cylinder head design must have something to do with cold start on a Cummins.

I had an 07 6.7 Cummins that I did a few hot rod things to. Granted it doesn't get that cold here but it did not even have an air inlet heater. It had an aftermarket intake, hose and plate that bolted to the head. The air intake heater and associated plumbing was very restrictive.

My son hasn’t ever installed the grid heater in either the 4bt or 6bt swaps and never issue, fire right up.
Our Nissan Diesel wasn’t equipped with grid or glow and it started fine at -10, but it did smoke pretty good for a second!
