I do a lot of start and stopping with my 500 and I let it idle. I usually start off in 2nd gear each time. Does this hurt the clutch in the trans and how does it actually work. Is it like a torque converter? Any help appreciated.
its a centrifical clutch it locks up as engine rpms increase it work like a clutch on a chainsaw torque convertors use oil and they just free wheel until they lock up solid the centrifical clutch is between the crankshaft and transmission output shaft
The 500 is geared so low 2nd would be fine on flat ground. As long as you are not abusing it, such as stalling it while keeping it floored.... You will be fine!
