I do a lot of start and stopping with my 500 and I let it idle. I usually start off in 2nd gear each time. Does this hurt the clutch in the trans and how does it actually work. Is it like a torque converter? Any help appreciated.

The 500 is geared so low 2nd would be fine on flat ground. As long as you are not abusing it, such as stalling it while keeping it floored.... You will be fine!
