Ok me and the wife decided instead of going down the battery operated atv route we want to get our son a 50-80cc atv. Smallest honda I’ve found is the rare gem trx70. I don’t want to buy new. All of the used ones I’ve found I’m stuck between the Yamaha raptor 50 because you can mod it easy for more speed or the Suzuki lt80. I’m just afraid the lt80 might be to much. I really want a 70 honda but they are so hard to find. Any input from other dads who have done this is much appreciated!

What age are the kids your talking about?
I have 12 grandkids from the age of 12 to 2 1/2 years.
Grandma and I did not like the idea of a r wheel safty wise. So I found a RZR 170 used and have not been disappointed. It has an adjustable seat, tilt steering and adjustable throttle.
The 12 year old wont hardly get out and let the rest drive it.

He is only 5. He has a monster truck we got for him and he has destroyed that thing. It’s falling apart and the battery is already trashed. I just feel like money would be better spent on a small gas atv that stays under 12mph for now. Atleast I can recoup money when I sell it.

I bought a Polaris 50 new a few years ago and it’s been pretty damn hard to beat. No issues to date and it gets used a fair amount. The 50cc space there is not much to choose from.

Just FYI, polaris & Kawasaki are rebranding there kid ATVs.

The Honda 90 has not changed in a lot of years.
If i where doing it again, I would get a TRX90 used.
Match the cost/age/how much do I work on it factor.
Then flip the 90 for a Recon when my kid was older.

Instead I bought a used Impulse 50.
Fixed it till I was sick of it then pushed it to the back of the barn and bought a Recon.
Kids are in there 20s and still ride the Recon.
Impulse still sits in the back of the barn.

My 2 yen worth.

Man honestly for the money buy a Chinese 50 (clone Honda engine) and call it a day. The one we bought for my daughter at 18 months that was almost 12 years ago, we gave it away to friends, it keeps going so that’s impressive.
They have remote so you can start or shut off if they are about to get in trouble. Has gone through 7-8 kids.
Could start on that, build up confidence and move on

Im with @CumminsPusher on this one. We bought Emilee a 110 Chinese special and her 2 older brothers beat the crap out of it. I used it as a pit bike when i dragraced and ragged on it myself. That is one tough sob. Buddy of mine's son kept razzing me about his 110 honda 4wheeler. I dusted his azz so bad he wouldnt come near my trailer rest of the night lol. That lil sucker would fly for its size.

the good ones are worth the money, when you get a used one you will get all your money back. I bought an lt 80 when she was 5 for 700 for two one had broke case. I sold it for 1000 after she rode them for 5 years with zero issues. it will go like 10 or 15 with the throttle stop like a third. they are tippy for a light newby though, I flipped the wheels around and 3inch spacer lugs all the way around, was better on the springs too. when they are ready it will go like 40 45 with a light person, a lot better than most of the small ones so you don't have to wait around for them to catch up if you go on a trail ride

My daughter started out on a Chinese atv
It was called a Manco 50 cc
This was a 2 stroke and it ran great for years.
At 5 years old an atv is your best bet.
She went straight to a 350 rancher and crf 70
I also recommend you putting a flag on it. When everyone is riding it is easy to lose sight of them in high weeds.

  1. Do not currently own
Im gonna 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc, the Chinese clone.

My son started on a electric rzr dirt quad and rode that from 2-3. and it was great.

At 3 we got home a chinese 110. I changed the front sprocket to give it more bottom end and put the throttle screw way in. I like it because it was cheap and because it had a foot break.

My girls got a Canam DS70 when they were 6. Ive made it close to as fast as a 90cc. My son will eventually get one of those. And ive actually thought about trading one for a Rzr170. I would consider a "disposable" atv for their first, especially if they dont have a younger sibling to hand it down to. There is a big difference in quality between the cheap and the nice ones. but the chinese ones are good enough for that age.
