P500 No engine braking

Was out this weekend, and occasionally my P500 would freewheel going down hill. Sometimes it would start out with engine braking then just freewheel. If I revved it up some it would catch and start engine braking again. Anyone run into this before? Any ideas?

Any gear, tried it in auto and manual, same thing. Oil level is normal. It's kinda scary when you're on a steep hill, engine braking is holding you back just perfectly, then it lets go!

I think that's the first place to start. If not that, then it looks like the clutch has to come out to get to the sprague clutch. I can't think of anything else.

Mine did it once 6 months ago, hasnt done it since. Didn’t change anything.

I've seen this in our honda atvs. It's the one way bearing in the clutch or primary gears. I've got a rancher 350 that's done it for 10 years now. I'm aware but forget to warn others and its scared the s*** out of a few people.

Also with time as it gets worse you'll start to hear a humming sound when shutting it off the sound will change as the bearings slow down ending in a popping sound when it re-enguages. Ours started this after ingesting some river water.
