My father in law (who bought his 1000-5 the same time we did) was just at Char Falls in his last week. We’re wanting to run up to Porcupine Lake and check out the fire damage. Maybe we’ll run into you one of these days....

Hello, I'm OldToby

Having bounced over the logging roads of north Idaho for 45+ years in a variety of vehicles (including a ‘62 Ranchero, ‘82 Ford Escort, various horses [horses count as vehicles], ‘64 Datsun pickup and 1960 Chevy Biscayne), I’ve finally found the ideal mountain-crawler in my 2018 1000-5 Deluxe. I’m very much looking forward to getting wet, cold and filthy while spending wads of cash on peripheral and unnecessary stuff like windshields, heaters, roofs and winches. I know I’ll benefit a bunch from the experience and “wisdom”of Forum members; maybe one of you’ll pull me out of a hole sometime, or vice versa.

Here is a little info about me to begin with!
Honda SxS ownership : Yes
I have owned, or currently own the following: UTV
My off-road experience level is: Trail Rider
My favorite place to ride is: Selkirk and Cabinet Mountains in north Idaho

Good morning. Oh, I’ve mostly been lurking around here, doing a little rattling around on weekends. The 1000-5 is starting to shape up, with just a few minor mods done (SATV split windshield, mirrors, throttlemaxx, bimini) and a few more piled up in boxes waiting to be done. My evil influence has affected my father-in-law and brother-in-law, both of whom bought 1000-5’s, so we have a sort of gang going up here. My work has been real busy, so I don’t get out as much as I’d like, but we plan to change that by taking July off and heading for NW Montana for a while, do some riding there. I haven’t been riding as much as I might if my wife and I weren’t building an ark (a 42-foot houseboat), doing all the work ourselves (which doesn’t sound that impressive until you consider that neither of us brought any skills to the project). We’re due to launch in July, so if the darned thing floats, that gets added to the activity mix. So busy with work, busy with projects, living vicariously through this forum for the most part. Thanks for asking.....

Well, the boat is. Or will be once we launch it. We moor out in Hope, although this summer we’re going to try tying off to mooring balls for a couple of months, then head for a marina in September. Makes me nervous as a cat to leave the boat on the lake like that, but we’re there all the time and related to everyone in town so people can keep an eye on it.

View attachment 132732 We’ve moored at Hope for 20 years. Hard to beat the views.
Gotcha. We went up there one time with Steve that owns the treehouse up past Whiskey Rock. Rode out in his buddy’s boat up to the dam played in the current then cruised over to Hope to eat. It is really beautiful there. Food was great at that restaurant. Some of the lake houses up there are incredible!
On way back the brand new engine blew up 1/4 mi out and we 4hp Yami trollered it all the way back in. It barely stayed up with the wind, long day. I’d like to get back up there this summer, not positive if you can get there without being on cement though?

I don’t know about south of Athol, but if you can get to Bunco Road (right there at Silverwood) you can go around the east side of the lake on Forest Service roads. Very cool trip. Once in Clark Fork you can jump on Spring Creek Road and take that to Hope. Although I’ve heard rumors that Viggo has shut down Spring Creek Road.....

Sounds like someone is going to meet Gramps Pacific Northwest Legend! Sorry @OldToby there can only be one GPNWL and CP already earned the title regardless of his repeated denials. I've never met the PNW Legend myself, but if I ever do I figure I will have to give him a peace offering of Coors Light.
