Not a thing to do with Honda but you should always engage 4x4 when not under a bind. If you must engage on a hill then you may need to rock backa and forth untill locked. All 4x4 are this way. Shift and get on it to fast and you may pop something.

Yeah, that had nothing to do with the problem. It was definitely a cable adjustment issue, as it was always slow to show 4WD in the dash display, sometimes taking many yards to engage.
