new member as of today. I have a 17' 1000-5 with only 1500 miles. The rear diff or tranny is whining bad above 30mph. Can you put a heavier/thicker oil in rear diff and subtransmission?

Welcome from Mississippi. I would try a synthetic 85w-140 in the rear. I think the sub-trans runs on engine oil.

Hey thanks, I was thinking not to try anything different in the sub trans just because it is same as motor. I have changed 2 times and oil/dif gear oil look new. Does yours whine too?

Well mine is a 2016 and it does whine a little, but I came out of an 07 Rhino so I really got no complaints.

Sub trans does take some oil as engine, but many have had luck putting Honda Moly blend in the sub trans only to aid in shifting smoothness.

Maybe consider Amsoil gear lube?

I run about 50/50 mix of 75-140 synthetic and lucas oil stabilizer in my diffs. For subtrans noise i added about 8oz of lucas.

I recently started using Amsoil 10W40 ATV oil in my 2003 Rincon. It's quieter and shifts bettter.

Whining above 30 mph from the rear? So it's related to gear speed, not engine RPM. Make sure oil levels are good and the oil is fresh/no water contamination. Run what the book says for the engine/DCT oil. I went with the slighty heavier Amsoil Severe Gear 75w110 in the diffs and they are quieter under load. Otherwise I run standard weight, but synthetic, oils everywhere else. Like what @HondaTech said, I'll be trying the Honda HP4M moly in the subtrans next change. But my machine is nice and quiet. The high pitched engine whirrrrrrr has subsided over time. I'm at 1500 miles.

Yesterday I used HP4M, 10w 40moly for the sub trans, GN4 10w 30 for engine/dct and royal purple 75w 140 for rear diff. Knocked the whine down substantially...

I put hpm4 10w 40 moly in the sub, 10w 30 gn4 in engine/dct and royal purple 75w 140 in rear diff yesterday. Easier to shift and whining is significantly reduced...
