P1000 Receiver Hitch Draw Bar?

So looking to add the draw bar into my receiver hitch, and I have several draw bars laying around from a lifetime of trading trucks, almost all of them have a 2 inch drop, or 3/4 inch rise. The ones I tried all seem to have interference from the muffler on the top side. Don't really want to use the drop side since I think it would drag on the ground.

What is everybody using for a draw bar? I'm almost leery of using the trailer hitch after seeing the "Receiver Hitch Beware" posting, but need it to drag an old trailer around the farm when working fence....and will be used as a pulling point if I need to pull or be pulled from the back.

Thanks in advance.

The Bob

Get a no drop or turn it upside down and it will be fine.
The issue on the 700 are all from a "upward" pressure.
Pulling has been fine.
I'm sure the 1000 was fixed in regards to this.
Guess we will find out before too much longer.

I'm using a Reese 5-1/4 drop turned up so I don't have to drop my trailer so far down. It's close to the muffler guard, but I haven't hit it yet.

I bought an 8" receiver extension so it would stick past the muffler

I re-drilled another hole in my hitch bar so it could be moved further out away from the muffler.

If you do purchase one, look on line for x-long hitch ball mounts. You can find them up to about 5"s longer than standard (11 or 12" pin to hitch ball hole) with a rise or drop you prefer. Brophy is one, Hidden Hitch has one 16"s long then you wouldn't have to use a hitch extender. I picked up the Brophy with a 3/4" rise and works much better for me and is not too long.

On my Commander I ran into the same problem, if I would have used one with a shorter drop I would have been okay. But I liked my 4 inch drop hitch I was using on my truck, so I bought one on Amazon for around $20-25 that was longer (16 inches I think) and it fixed my problem.

I had a couple of hours to kill yesterday, so went to the local Wally World, Home Depot, Atwoods, then to a custom truck equipment shop here in town. Found lots of solutions at the custom shop, nothing worth mentioning at the big box stores. The custom shop had extensions, longer draw bars, etc.

So have a source now, in line with y'all's recommendations, but digging back thru my box of goodies to see if I can find a solution without spending $$$. (I'm retired, and now a cheapskate!)

this is not a p1k, but a 700. I'd recommend not hitting the trails with an extended draw bar (or any draw bar for that matter) as it will have more leverage in the event it gets hung up on something, I know some of you guys have seen the results, for the rest of you this was done with a normal length draw bar. Just make sure you take it out when not in use.

Yes, I saw that on the 700 section. I just found an old home made draw bar with no drop that is long enough to work, sticks out past the muffler. The PITA was getting the pin that holds the cross pin in, not enough room in that little area. Grinder helps...

I will try to remember to remove it when trail riding, but 90% of the use will be farm use. And it will be handy with the little utility trailer I picked up for $100....shovels, PHD, etc, will go on it.

Had problem with license plate in way from dealer, extension solved the problem and easier to reach.

I can see a big ole rock just waiting to tear that off in the wrong situation, where I normally ride I might last a day before a rock shelf pulled that extension and the hitch up and off as the rear end drops down, hope you don't have any issues but there is a reason the OEM hitch doesn't stick out.

Appreciate the concern. It is actually higher off the ground than it looks and comes off with one pin. It will work great with my new deer/ elk hoist, 500 lbs. for gutting and skinning. Most areas where I hunt are very tame, no mud holes or deep ruts. Bring chain saw for trees in way and winch my way out of trouble. Will probably keep it in bed till I need it. :)
