I think you'll run into the same problem as the d-ring. You could drill the hole out a little bit more of you were dead set on using it though. Those cold shuts work perfect with zero modifications.
What's the recommended way of closing them? I'm a bit of a perfectionist and wouldn't want to chew the heck out of it using a channel lock or vise grip. Any suggestions?

Channel locks worked fine for me, and 2 others' tailgates that I did, with no marring. If you're concerned with marring, put a rag over it.

I used channel locks since they were the closest thing available. They close up pretty easily so it doesn't take much force to close them.

Any issues with the tracks? I’ve been considering getting a set for my machine.

Had the tracks on a Polaris and and then bought the Honda got the change over kit and never looked back they work excellent in all snow conditions and I can use my pioneer all year long. The Honda was a good choice because of the transmission.
