Was that video taken recently? I heard the area has been closed indefinitely due to the fire last summer.

Good thing you got to check it out. It's a really scenic ride but has been closed since last summer. :(

What’s the history of that trail?
Is there plans to clean it up and reopen it?

Another section (8 miles, I believe) recently reopened. The state has passed funding to repair the entire route...so it will reopen, but no eta has been given.

If I recall, it was constructed to build a dam up that way.

This tells of the history better than I can... Apache Trail - Wikipedia
And this has good area info as well... Apache Trail, Arizona (AZ 88)

Anyone I talked to about it seemed to think it would be a couple of years before it could be reopened.

I also heard some of it was recently reopened, the section just past Tortilla Flat. That's good news about the funding to repair the entire route, I really like riding through there. My buddy and I were able to get to Fish Creek on bikes from Roosevelt Dam about a month and a half ago, seeing the damage up close was jaw dropping.

Thank you, I appreciate that. Is that damage all from weather? Heavy rains, earthquake???

Yes, as DG Rider mentions, the flash floods from the heavy rains after the fire. It was a one-two punch because the vegetation that would otherwise soak up or slow down heavy rain was burned away from the huge fires. So the water flow was very strong with nothing to hold it back, and that caused landslides and heavy erosion.

This is the largest of the landslides right on the trail.

This is looking down from the lower right corner of the above picture.

The trail shown in the top of the above picture is where I'm standing while taking this zoomed picture opposite of the landslide. Notice the slightly lighter colored rock face in the middle of the pic, that's where the huge rocks broke off from.

Here's a fully zoomed shot of the section where rocks broke away

It's a beautiful area and I hope to be able to ride it again soon.

Wow, that is very nice. Glad to hear there are restoration plans. Another place for me to add to the list to see. 👍
